Former St Peter's College [Palmerston North] student Ben Booker, who
has just finished his third year in classical piano performance at the
New Zealand School of Music, will perform at a piano recital at Te
Manawa art gallery on Sunday, November 20, at 3.30pm. The recital
comprises eight pieces from four composers, from the Baroque
contrapuntal genius of Bach through the humorous elegance of Haydn, to
the two masters of Romantic piano works, Chopin and Liszt. Proceeds
(entry by donation) will go to the charity Caritas, which aims to make
a difference in the lives of people living with poverty or injustice.

St Joseph's Venturer Scouts are using an oldfashioned tried-and true
fundraising method to help some of their members on their way –
selling lamingtons. Twenty three Venturer Scouts will attend the 12th
New Zealand Venture in Southland late next year, and three will attend
the 46th Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School in Matamata in January.

Auckland from October 8 to 13 this year. Divine Retreat Centre,
located in Kerala, India is the largest Catholic Retreat Centre in the
world. Over 10 million people from India and all over the world have

Global Occupy movement a 'biblical voice'

A leader of New Zealand's mainstream churches says the worldwide
"Occupy" movement is a prophetic voice in the tradition of Biblical
prophets such as Jeremiah and Isaiah. New Zealand Christian Network
director Glyn Carpenter, representing most of the main Protestant and
Catholic churches, visited the Occupy movement campsite in Auckland's
Aotea Square on Tuesday to support the protesters' call for "a
dialogue on growing inequality".

If you thought watching the Rugby World Cup final was hard going,
spare a thought for Monsignor David Bell. Msgr Bell, from St Mary's
Catholic Church, was assigned as chaplain to the French rugby team for
this year's tournament and while Les Bleus didn't seek his
involvement, he still felt compelled to support the players.

Memo to bishops: Think globally on religious freedom
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/memo-bishops-think-globally-religious-freedom

During their fall meeting this week in Baltimore, the U.S. bishops
heard a report from their new Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty,
led by Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport, Conn. It's a measure of how
seriously the bishops take the subject that the committee includes
heavyweights such as Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington as well as
Archbishops Charles Chaput of Philadelphia and Wilton Gregory of
Atlanta. The committee was created primarily to fight American
church/state battles, such as proposed mandates from the Department of
Health and Human Services regarding coverage of contraception and
sterilization in private insurance plans; a Supreme Court case that
could erode the "ministerial exception" allowing religious groups to
hire and fire in accord with their beliefs; and threats to the ability
of Catholic individuals and organizations to decline to serve same-sex
couples under gay marriage laws...
