A letter has surfaced showing the Pope, in a previous role, was reluctant to dismiss a priest who abused children.
[Like this one, all the short reports on this case leave out the fact that the offender had already been suspended indefinitely from priestly duties when laicisation was being discussed, giving readers who don't know the difference between suspension and laicisation (and who couldn't care less) the impression that Cardinal Ratzinger failed to restrain him. This TVNZ report includes a comment by Bishop Browne deploring abuse, inserted in such a way that the reader might think the bishop was commenting on the headline report, which he wasn't.
