THE FIFTEENTH STATION PODCAST

Episode 122 — Christchurch, Christ's prayer, Christianity and Christmas fun (December 18, 2017)

In the final episode of 2017, there is cause for celebration, but also cause for concern. In New Zealand, Catholics welcomed the appointment of a new Bishop of Christchurch. But there was also fear that attempts to legislate euthanasia might be successful in the country, though there are many hurdles before that can happen. In Europe, Pope Francis is wondering aloud if the Lord's Prayer might be confusing people, while the new Polish leader wonders how Christianity might again shape Europe. But when it comes to pure fun, our Anglican friends seem to have it sorted, with a toboggan ride in an English church. Just another fun Christmas episode of The 15th Station. Wishing all our listeners and your loved ones a happy and holy Christmas.

People expect popes to be savvy political operators, able to wave a magic wand and make all the world's problems disappear. That's a completely unrealistic vision, of course, but that doesn't stop popes from trying, and Pope Francis perhaps more than most...

RNZ. Sunday Morning. The sanctity of the confessional is under threat (audio)
One of the recommendations of Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse would require clergy told of child abuse in the confessional to be required by law to report it. The inquiry spanned five years and many different kinds of institutions including the Australian Catholic Church, and found tens of thousands of child victims The Australian government must now decide how to respond to the recommendations. But one of them - to require clergy to report child abuse told in the sanctity of the confessional means breaking that seal of silence. Marist Father Neil Vaney explains what the sanctity of the confessional means to the Catholic Church.

THE FIFTEENTH STATION PODCAST

Episode 121 — Protesting, Praying, Poverty and Poor Choices (November 15, 2017)

The Catholic and Lutheran Churches have marked 500 years since Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of a German cathedral, reflecting on the shared faith and expressing a desire for unity. In the new New Zealand Parliament, there's talk about a reformation of the opening prayer, removing references to God and Jesus Christ. In Rome, Pope Francis will celebrate the first World Day of the Poor with several hundred people living in poverty, while in Wellington, the Sisters of Compassion are waiting for a miracle — or two. And finally a Hollywood star reflects on his hopes that God is a movie fan, but also forgiving of poor role choices. Join Anna, Donald, James and Gavin in this month's episode of The 15th Station.

MPs consider dropping God, Queen from prayer
MPs may soon no longer seek the guidance from God or make references to the Queen or Jesus Christ in the daily prayer that opens Parliament. Politicians are being consulted on the wording of the prayer, but that hasn't stopped new Speaker Trevor Mallard from opening Parliament this week in te reo Maori with words that translate to "Almighty God", before dropping references to the Queen and Jesus Christ.

** Vatican nuclear summit blends Realpolitik and 'Reaching for the Moon'

Day one of a major Vatican summit titled "Prospects for a World Free from Nuclear Weapons and for Integral Disarmament" was devoted to lofty ideals. Day two brought some strong doses of Realpolitik, including a warning that the nuclear powers most likely to be open to disarmament are also the ones least likely to unleash nuclear carnage.

** Christians in India call for justice for former 'untouchables' this Sunday

The Catholic bishops in India joined with the country's National Council of Churches to institute Dalit Liberation Sunday every second Sunday of November. The former "untouchables" have suffered discrimination for centuries, but those who are Christians suffer additional marginalization, as well as losing eligibility for government assistance programs available to other Dalits.

Leo Francis John Buchanan was a well-known paediatrician, proud Maori, devout Catholic, rugby nut and a lover of art and music. Hungry for justice, thirsty for change: Caritas State of the Environment Report for Oceania 2016
The Jubilee Year of Mercy called for by Pope Francis (8 December 2015-20 November 2016) reminds us of the imperative to give practical assistance to the poor – to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, and shelter the homeless. It is a time to ensure all people can access the basics of living. It also calls for addressing all issues of justice and forgiveness, of restoring right relationship with each other and with the earth...

On Reformation milestone, experts detect 'astounding' thirst for unity
Two experts on the Catholic/Lutheran relationship, one Catholic and the other Lutheran, both say that joint commemorations of today's 500th anniversary of the launch of the Protestant Reformation reflect a strong yearning for unity in the grassroots, and may represent a new "springtime" in ecumenism, meaning the quest for Christian unity.

** Pope condemns xenophobia, calls migration a 'sign of the times'
Speaking at a Rome conference organized by International Federation of Catholic Universities, Pope Francis said that the reception of migrants is generating negative reactions, "sometimes even discriminatory and xenophobic," reactions in countries of ancient Christian tradition, and called on Catholic universities to read migration as a "sign of the times."
