NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

'Poverty in an Affluent Society'
A statement for Social Justice Week, September 2008
http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/CU0807/S00303.htm

The New Zealand Catholic bishops have reaffirmed their commitment to stand
with New Zealanders in need, in a statement prepared for Social Justice Week
2008. The bishops express concern that, despite the increased social
spending of the last decade, the benefits of economic growth have not been
shared by all, and that living standards have not improved for the poorest
New Zealanders.

Social Justice Week is celebrated in the Catholic Church from 14-20
September, with a focus this year on poverty in an affluent society.
Catholic social justice agency Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is this week
distributing resources to Catholic parishes, primary schools and youth
groups to assist Catholics to examine how well we are looking after the most
vulnerable members of our community.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

Benedict's vacation spot is significant in his history
Pope Benedict XVI is on vacation from July 28 to Aug. 11, passing his summer
break in an Alpine town in northern Italy known as Bressanone by Italians
and Brixen by German-speakers. Benedict is a guest of the local seminary,
lodging in an apartment known colloquially as "the bishop's room." It's a
setting where this pope clearly feels at home...
