A Life In Focus: Obstetrician GP a man of values
Northern Advocate — A002 — 01 September 2009
Dr Tim Buckley, whose 30 years of delivering Whangarei babies was honoured with a Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, has died at his home in Whangarei. He was 84. A Northland representative golfer, he had been signed on as a member of the Mt Denby Golf Club in Whangarei at age 8. Excluding the years when he was a boarder at St Patrick's College Silverstream, at university and involved in specialist training, he remained a staunch and loyal supporter of the club for the rest of his life.

Church's 'power distance index' in decline

There's a bizarre story out of Italy this week that deserves its moment in the sun. It's a soap opera, really, as tawdry and tragic as these bits of voyeurism usually are, yet it also suggests two points with potentially broad implications:

* The political and cultural ties in the West that in recent decades have bound the church to the political right may be unraveling.

* The "Power Distance Index" in Catholicism, meaning the willingness of ordinary people to accept the authority of the bishops to manage the internal affairs of the church, is declining rapidly, and not just in countries scarred by the sexual abuse crisis ...
