Bishop Barry Jones leads the Requiem Mass for Bishop John Cunneen at St Mary's Church in Christchurch. The Bishop of Christchurch from 1995 to 2007, John Cunneen died last Tuesday after a long illness aged 78. About 400 mourners
attended yesterday's service, before a private interment at the Lady Chapel of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.

Former British Labour MP John Battle became Blair’s faith envoy not long before the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States. Battle, who is in New Zealand as a guest of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues at the University of Otago, spoke at Christ Church Cathedral yesterday. ‘‘It’s much calmer here. A Catholic preaching in an Anglican church? That would be a real big event in Leeds,’’ he said.
