It's been 144 years since three dripping-wet French nuns appeared in Christchurch to launch a new mission. They knew little about the country, their reading having been based around reports of French explorers' encounters with Maori in the previous generation. They came expecting to find a south seas paradise inhabited by dusky natives thirsting for The Truth. In Christchurch they discovered something quite different. The city, even as early as 1868, was a sizeable settlement on the English market-town model and scale...

Veteran human rights campaigner and pacifist Rosa Oliver, 91, died in Blenheim on Wednesday. Evin Wood, a friend of Miss Oliver since the 1960s, said she had always been a vehement supporter of peace, justice and human rights causes.

For more than 40 years the sweet sounds coming from Orakei's St Joseph's Church have been the work of a talented organist. Hugh Fulton of St Heliers has received a medal from Pope Benedict XVI in recognition of his service to the Catholic church.

A little cottage on a hill overlooking Kawhia Harbour is a constant reminder of a tough and compassionate Irishwoman who defied officialdom and refused to desert the people of the town. She was Mary Reidy, known by the respectful title Sister Reidy, and she typified the determination and resilience of pioneer women who gave so much of themselves and asked so little during a lifetime of service to their communities.

Temuka's St Joseph's Church is still waiting for a report on earthquake damage. The church's spire was left balancing precariously after the September 2010 earthquake.

What is President Obama thinking in announcing he supports gay marriage in the middle of an election campaign? When will the euthanasia lobby stop pushing its barrow? And can something that has been blessed be un-blessed? Those stories and more on a full show this month on The 15th Station.

The View from Down Here (May 15, 2012)

One story — and one story only — seems to have dominated the US political and cultural scene over the past week, and that's President Barack Obama's announcement that his position on same-sex marriage has now evolved and he supports it. He said it was his Christian faith and adherence to the Golden Rule that guided his decision to move from a stated opposition to gay marriage to supporting it. Brendan, Tim and Gavin dedicate most of this week's show to the topic. Here's a link to the article Brendan mentions in the show: "What is Marriage?"

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Three tensions beneath the latest Vatican dispute
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/three-tensions-beneath-latest-vatican-dispute

One should not make too much of a recent contretemps at the Pontifical Academy for Life, because it's not really as if the fate of the Vatican hangs in the balance. Yet the dust-up is nevertheless worth pondering, primarily because it captures three recurrent tensions in Catholic life, with consequences far broader than the immediate future of one pontifical body:
•European vs. American sensibilities vis-à-vis the "life issues"
•Prophets vs. team players
•Dialogue vs. debate in engaging those who don't share church teaching

After a brief review of the controversy, I'll unpack each...
