Each holiday season, regardless of which political party is in power,
we hear from all sections of society about the need to reduce the road
toll. The road toll is a relatively depoliticised tool. By contrast,
the question of the measurement of child poverty is complex, hard to
understand and has become a highly polarised matter...

Station XV: Episode 75 — Exhortations, Commendations and Affiliations
(December 16, 2013)

Pope Francis continues to dominate headlines around the world — and
discussion on the Station 15 podcast network — with his naming as
Time's Person of the Year and the release of his apostolic exhortation
Evangelii Gaudium. The Church in New Zealand has also been in the
news, with the release of Census data about religious affiliation
showing Catholics the largest Christian denomination for the first
time as "no religion" continues to soar ahead, and the NZ bishops
calling for people to be mindful of their attitude at Christmas, with
love of neighbour taking precedence over consumerism. There's also a
bit of fun around Pope Francis's other end-of-year awards. Happy
Christmas from the team at The 15th Station.

http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/pope-no-down-time-and-interview-vaticans-financial-reformer

Not so long ago, the yuletide season at the Vatican meant calm. The
pope and the Curia went into semi-hibernation while hearing Advent
sermons from the Preacher of the Papal Household while the system was
on a basic hiatus, with no real drama rolling out of Rome until well
into January. In the Francis era, however, there's no "off" switch,
which makes me very glad I've been in Rome this week...

Census points to non-religious NZ
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/9501270/Census-points-to-non-religious-NZ
Census 2013 figures released yesterday show any claim to a Christian
majority in New Zealand is shaky, with fewer than 1.9 million people
affiliated with a church, down from more than 2 million in 2006.
Anglicans have taken the biggest hit, losing nearly 100,000 followers,
with the flock dropping to just 459,000. The sharp drop means
Catholicism is, for the first time, New Zealand's most popular
religion, with 492,000 devotees, down from 508,000 in 2006.

Alternatives to East-West Link sought (full text; audio report)
http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/regional/229935/alternatives-to-east-west-link-sought
Auckland Transport has proposed four possible routes for the $1
billion East-West Link through Otahuhu and Mangere, which some
residents say could destroy up to 500 homes. A meeting of the
council's infrastructure committee on Wednesday voted to ask the
transport agency to consider options that don't involve major roads
and consult thoroughly with the public. A spokesperson for the Mangere
Catholic Parishes, Teresa Ah Wa, says despite calls to look at
alternatives, she is not confident that communities will be consulted.
She believes the current proposals are violating people's rights, and
parishioners fear the worst for the community and schools in the area.
A petition against the link with 4000 signatures was presented to
Parliament on Tuesday.

carries an echo of the area's past in its name, Seafarers. The
building's original purpose has not entirely passed into history. It
survives in the Auckland International Seafarers Centre, on the first
floor of the building's Quay St frontage. It's all that remains of the
Mission to Seafarers (in less inclusive days it was called the Mission
to Seamen, of course)...

Pastoral care and peacemaking remain key parts of an ancient tradition
of chaplaincy, Emeritus Prof Colin Gibson said last night.
Prof Gibson, a former long-serving member of the Otago Tertiary
Chaplaincy Trust Board, was speaking at an anniversary dinner to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Otago chaplaincy
service in 1963.

I've never been able to use the term "heart-warming" without a
slightly derisive sneer. But a couple of days ago I watched a film
that really was heart-warming, in the sense that you left the theatre
feeling better about life and your fellow human beings than you might
have been when you walked in. Gardening with Soul is a feature-length
documentary about Sister Loyola Galvin.

Syrian Christians; pope-mania; and a looming check-up on Vatican finances
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/syrian-christians-pope-mania-and-looming-check-vatican-finances

Syria's roll call of missing Christians continues to grow. In April,
Islamic militants kidnapped two Orthodox prelates. In July, the same
fate befell Italian Fr. Paolo Dall'Oglio, a well-known Jesuit pioneer
in Christian/Muslim relations and anti-Assad activist. Given the
courage and persistence shown by the country's religious women, it was
probably inevitable that sooner or later it would be their turn, and
that's precisely what happened this week...

Mass for the masses (photo caption: full text)
http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/9437212/Mass-for-the-masses
More than 8000 Catholics gathered at the CBS Arena in Christchurch
yesterday to celebrate the conclusion of the Year of Faith. The mass
was celebrated by Bishop Barry Jones, the Catholic Bishop of
Christchurch, and was part of a day of activities including a cultural
festival and choirs. The bishop's pastoral office director, Mike
Stopforth, said most masses in the greater Christchurch area had been
combined and it was a chance to celebrate faith together. A choral
performance featured more than 400 children, aged between 8 and 13,
from 24 Canterbury schools.

Francis and a church that breathes with both lungs
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/francis-and-church-breathes-both-lungs

There's no mistaking the fact that Pope Francis' new apostolic
exhortation, "Joy of the Gospel," released Tuesday by the Vatican,
amounts to a call for fairly sweeping change on multiple fronts. Yet
there's a deeper sense in which "The Joy of the Gospel" stands in
clear continuity with Francis' immediate predecessor, Benedict XVI,
and in particular his 2009 social encyclical Caritas in Veritate. In
effect, both documents amount to full-frontal assaults not on Catholic
doctrine or discipline, but on contemporary Catholic sociology...

Pope Benedict XVI announced a Year of Faith beginning in October 2012
and coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican
Council. This Year of Faith concludes at the end of November and
Bishop Jones, Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, called for a gathering
of the local faithful. Accordingly, a huge celebration named Faithfest
will take place in the arena on the Solemnity of Christ the King,
Sunday, November 24 ...

The Pope and I
A key figure in the new Vatican regime tells of the winds of change
blowing through the Church.
By Karl du Fresne
NZ Listener 14 November 2013
http://www.listener.co.nz/current-affairs/the-pope-and-i/
Is this a pointer to a new-look Catholic Church? Cardinal Óscar
Rodríguez Maradiaga of Honduras, who is personally close to the Pope
and was once considered a prime candidate for the papacy himself, is
visiting New Zealand. That is rare enough, but what would once have
seemed almost unthinkable is that he has offered himself for
interviews with the secular media. Even the Wellington-based
communications adviser to the Catholic bishops seems pleasantly taken
aback at his openness... [This article in the New Zealand Listener,

Station XV: Episode 74 — The Pope, the Cardinals and "Lesus" Christ
(November 15, 2013)

Is the Church about to become a democracy? And a democracy that has
women cardinals, no less? Your answers to those questions will depend
on which news sources you've been reading over the past few weeks.
Pope Francis is surveying dioceses and parishes to get some insight
into family life in preparation for next year's synod on the topic,
and there's been conjecture he'll appoint women cardinals at his first
consistory in February. What we do know is that a Latin American
cardinal thinks New Zealand should have a louder voice in Rome, a
$20,000 bathtub isn't a great idea and someone forgot to proofread
some new Vatican coins. Join James, Don and Gavin for this month's
show.
