RNZ. Sunday Morning. The sanctity of the confessional is under threat (audio)
One of the recommendations of Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse would require clergy told of child abuse in the confessional to be required by law to report it. The inquiry spanned five years and many different kinds of institutions including the Australian Catholic Church, and found tens of thousands of child victims The Australian government must now decide how to respond to the recommendations. But one of them - to require clergy to report child abuse told in the sanctity of the confessional means breaking that seal of silence. Marist Father Neil Vaney explains what the sanctity of the confessional means to the Catholic Church.

Those attempting to ease the pressures of Christmas for people in need this year include the Salvation Army, Anglican Family Care, Presbyterian Support Otago and Catholic Social Services. Alongside the Methodist Mission and St Vincent de Paul they form the Christian Helping Agencies Group and are working tirelessly to ensure that this Christmas people have enough through the Christmas Hamper Project.

Colleen Duncan remembers St Patrick's School, Nightcaps, having rolls of between 90 and 120 in the 1960s. She was a pupil during that period at the western Southland school, which will mark 100 years on its current site on Friday. The school was earlier located at Wreys Bush.
