'Caritas Update' No. 36 Spring 2004
The focus of the spring edition of the Caritas Update is on this year’s Social Justice Week topic of Mental Health in New Zealand.
The lead article looks at how the changing face of mental health services has affected those in our community who use them. The article also discusses experiences of those who have suffered trauma, such as refugees and what communities can do to be more welcoming places for those who suffer from mental illness.
Linking in with the Social Justice Week theme, the article on page 5 looks at programmes Caritas is involved with overseas that are assisting local organisations in helping their communities overcome the lasting effects of war and conflict.
There is further information on the situation in Sudan and Bangladesh and on the relations between Australia and East Timor over the contested oil reserves on page 6.
The Country Brief section on page 7 looks at the on-going struggle for independence in West Papua and the overturning of convictions by the Indonesian Court of Appeal, for those involved in the East Timor massacres in 1999.
The Schools Spotlight section discusses how experiential education is a useful tool in helping students develop empathy for those in need. Photos from students of St Peter’s College, Palmerston North and St Joseph’s primary, Christchurch feature. Finally, there is the introduction of new staff member Kathy Orr-Nimmo.

http://nzceo.catholic.org.nz/goodnews/18/goodnews18.shtml
Editorial: Br Pat Lynch, CEO, NZ Catholic Education Office A community developing a new school has the opportunity to put its indelible mark on that school – this is a big challenge requiring faith and wisdom. The focus in the four recently opened schools profiled in this issue of Good News and the News is clearly on the development of Catholic Character, through an initial period of discernment, a thoughtful, prayerful approach, and a constant focus on the values established at the very beginning ....

'Good News & The News': a Broadsheet of Good Practice in Integrated Schools. July 2004 vol.18
http://nzceo.catholic.org.nz/goodnews/18/goodnews18.shtml
Editorial: Br Pat Lynch, CEO, NZ Catholic Education Office A community developing a new school has the opportunity to put its indelible mark on that school – this is a big challenge requiring faith and wisdom. The focus in the four recently opened schools profiled in this issue of Good News and the News is clearly on the development of Catholic Character, through an initial period of discernment, a thoughtful, prayerful approach, and a constant focus on the values established at the very beginning ....

Fewer than half had been to a Catholic primary school ...
Building Catholic Culture and Relationships at St Thomas More School, Mt Maunganui Kath Joblin, Principal Building contractors and architects have been constant companions since St Thomas More Catholic School opened in January 2001. The accelerated growth of our school has justified the faith shown by parishioners who originally started talking about a new school in the 1980s. A roll growth from 65 to 150 students in four years illustrates the level of commitment to Catholic education in this area ...

"The Weka-Feather Cloak" (book review) http://www.theotokos.org.uk/pages/breviews/misc/wekafeat.html Eat your heart out, Harry Potter! The publishers of Leo Madigan’s latest book say The Weka-Feather Cloak is their answer to “you-know-what”. And it is. But it’s a very different brew. The principal character is also a young boy, Danny Mago, but where Harry would be more at home in Mordor, Danny is a 21st century Frodo. For like The Lord of the Rings, Madigan’s book is a fantasy, and, like Tolkien, Madigan uses fantasy as a mirror to reflect reality - in this case also, reality as seen with the eyes of Catholic faith...

Editorial: "Seasons of Grace" This month, fittingly, our principle theme is the grace of God. It balances last month’s reflection on the nature of evil and sin. There is no more Christian concept. When asked what he thought was unique about Christian faith, C.S.Lewis at once replied, “Oh, that’s easy. It’s grace.” No other word or notion quite captures the overflowing goodness of God who accepts each of us without examination, who heals without charge, and who is continually “making all things new”....
Feature article: "Amazing Grace" Grace, as identified in the Christian tradition, is monstrously unjust, says Dunedin Catholic writer, Mike Riddell. This article complements his piece on human evil in the July issue. The bad news is we are a sin-sodden lot; the good news – the ‘gospel’ – is God still loves us and forgives us ...

Cardinal expresses sympathy to Jewish community (full text)
The Catholic Archbishop of Wellington, Cardinal Thomas Williams, has written to the Jewish community in Wellington expressing his deep sadness at the desecration of the graves in the Jewish section of the Bolton Street and Makara cemeteries. The Cardinal described the vandalism as shameful and atrocious, and on behalf of the Catholic people of the Wellington Archdiocese expressed profound sympathy to those who have family members buried in the two cemeteries as well as to the Jewish community as a whole. Many Catholic churches around the country offered prayers at weekend Masses for those Jewish families who had been affected by the desecration of the graves and the burning of the prayer chapel.

That, at least, is what has been happening in Europe during the past two years, as the team cobbling together a constitution for the enlarged European Union sorts out what it wants to do about God....
