April 10, 2012: In this week's episode, Brendan and Gavin talk about the big news of the past week — President Obama's comments about the possible fate of his health care legislation as the Supreme Court rules on its constitutionality. What does it mean for the separation of powers in the US? What does it tell us about President Obama and his re-election bid? The guys also talk about the latest deal between the US and Afghanistan about night raids in the latter, the ongoing debate on religious freedom and give a quick Republican primary update. A Vatican document to make Socrates proud
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/vatican-document-make-socrates-proud
As Pope Paul VI once famously told the United Nations, the Catholic church likes to think of itself as an "expert in humanity." Development of Catholic social teaching over the last 120 years is a good example, as the church has tried to bring its moral tradition to bear on questions of economic justice. Yet whenever the church tries to say something on economics, it faces a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" dilemma about whether or not to get concrete...

An Easter message from the leaders of the Auckland churches: Rising hope
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10796782
In conquering death, Jesus shows us that extinction is not our evolutionary fate, because through him death is not the end of the road. Easter is the great event that lies at the very heart of the Christian faith, and if there is one word that encompasses this meaning and significance, that word is "hope"...

The Big Question
Sunday Star Times

For some, Easter weekend means little more than public holidays and hot cross buns. For others, it's the most significant date in the calendar. From bishops to rugby league players, from those who believe to those who don't, we asked one simple question: What does God mean to you? ...

Catholic kapa haka groups have been practising to go to Hokianga Harbour this year for the annual Maori Catholic Easter Celebration, the Hui Aranga. The event has been held every Easter since 1946. Benedict XVI and the lament of the hawks
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/benedict-xvi-and-lament-hawks

Three decades ago, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger rose to fame as the architect of the Vatican's crackdown on liberation theology in Latin America, which he saw as a dangerous baptism of Marxist class struggle. Since his election as pope, Benedict XVI has seemed less notable for his anti-communist audacity than his appetite for détente. Benedict's March 26-28 visit to Cuba, in which he met both the Castro brothers but none of the pro-democracy dissidents, offered the latest case in point ...

LENT 2012

http://www.caritas.org.nz/take-action/events/lent-2012

Lent 2012 began on Ash Wednesday 22 February and ends with Easter on 8 April. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand's theme for Lent 2012 is "Called by faith to act with generous hearts". This theme was inspired by the words of Pope Benedict XVI addressed to the Caritas Internationalis General Assembly for 2011.

The Lenten theme is being promoted in schools as "Hearts filled with hope" – recognising that good people everywhere have hopeful hearts. Our schools resource was sent to all Catholic schools in early December and is also downloadable from the Website. Parish Lenten resources are available from the same page and visitors may donate to the Caritas Lent Appeal there.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC, by John L. Allen Jr

Benedict's gentle debunk of clericalism
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/benedicts-gentle-debunk-clericalism

Pope Benedict XVI's diplomatic high-wire act in Havana, pressing the case for religious freedom but avoiding direct clash with the Castro regime, was the main news flash out of his March 23-28 trip to Mexico and Cuba. Yet there was another leitmotif to the outing, more subtle but arguably more decisive for the church across Latin America. The pope offered a gentle, yet unmistakable, debunking of clericalism...

LENT 2012

http://www.caritas.org.nz/take-action/events/lent-2012

Teaching was a passion for Claudia Wysocki. Throughout half a century, much of it as principal at three schools, she made a notable contribution to education. She introduced the International Baccalaureate (IB) qualification system to New Zealand, in 1989. She lived to see opposition and scepticism towards IB overcome, with universities accepting its worth and 19 schools adopting it. She died recently, aged 72.

Papal Transition, Obama, Nigeria and China
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/papal-transition-obama-nigeria-and-china

This is, after all, a pontiff who departs next week for a six-day trip to Mexico and Cuba. Yet it's not just a birthday that has people thinking about succession. There's also a mounting perception that for all of Benedict's brilliance as a teacher, something isn't working in the internal governance of the Vatican. With this perceived crisis of competence in the background, two prominent voices in Italy have, in effect, declared the informal papal transition season to be open ...

THE VIEW FROM DOWN HERE

http://station15.co.nz

March 6, 2012: On the eve of Super Tuesday, the three self-proclaimed experts on American politics and culture break down the current state of play in the Republican primary contest as Mitt Romney looks to continue the momentum he gained in a series of victories from Michigan to Arizona to Washington last week. Will he be able to do so? Or will Rick Santorum bounce back? What about Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul? The panel also discusses the way Catholics have voted in the primaries thus far, Rick Santorum's criticism of JFK, a group declaring war on the US Government and a new movie assessing if America is broken and, if so, how to fix it. Just another week in The View from Down Here.

Jewish/Catholic ties and thoughts on Pius XII

I was in Chicago earlier this week to present the 17th annual Cardinal Joseph Bernardin lecture on Jewish/Catholic relations. Co-sponsored by the Chicago archdiocese and a variety of Jewish groups, the series commemorates a landmark speech delivered by the late Bernardin at Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1995. My topic was the future of Jewish/Catholic relations in the 21st century, and the following is a summary of what I tried to say...

LENT 2012

http://www.caritas.org.nz/take-action/events/lent-2012

February 28, 2012: In the second episode of 'The View from Down Here', Brendan, Tim and Gavin revisit the Republican primary contest and, in particular, look at Ron Paul, the congressman from Texas. Is he being ignored by the media? Does he have a chance to win the nomination? Can — and should — Catholic voters support him? We look at a pundit's view of that, and also deconstruct an opponent of Rick Santorum who tries to portray the former Pennsylvania senator as not a very good Catholic. Finally, we look at the way atheists are fighting for their rights to not be offended by such outrageous words as "Amen" and "prayer".

Three myths about the church to give up for Lent

I realize this comes a little late, but if anybody's still on the market for something to give up for Lent, I'd suggest that the following misconceptions about the Catholic church and about Christianity in general would be dandy bits of intellectual junk to cut loose in the spirit of the season...
