It's been 144 years since three dripping-wet French nuns appeared in Christchurch to launch a new mission. They knew little about the country, their reading having been based around reports of French explorers' encounters with Maori in the previous generation. They came expecting to find a south seas paradise inhabited by dusky natives thirsting for The Truth. In Christchurch they discovered something quite different. The city, even as early as 1868, was a sizeable settlement on the English market-town model and scale...

A little cottage on a hill overlooking Kawhia Harbour is a constant reminder of a tough and compassionate Irishwoman who defied officialdom and refused to desert the people of the town. She was Mary Reidy, known by the respectful title Sister Reidy, and she typified the determination and resilience of pioneer women who gave so much of themselves and asked so little during a lifetime of service to their communities.

They were lazy, hazy nights. Political researcher Laura Adshead, a striking young blonde, was relaxing in a bar on the Kings Road. It was a Friday evening and she had brought her new boyfriend, David, to meet her childhood best friend. The year was 1990. To passers-by, the gathering was unremarkable. This was the breeding ground of twinset-and-pearl Sloane Rangers after all, and this group did not stand out. How things change. This week, Adshead was revealed to have turned her back on a life of drugs and alcohol to become a nun. Now aged 44, she's committed to a life of celibacy and prayer as Sister John Mary. Her closely cropped hair is hidden by a traditional wimple. And who was that devoted boyfriend? UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

The pontiff turned 85 on Monday, making him the oldest pope in the last 110 years and one of just six to reign past 85 in the last half-millennium. On Thursday, Benedict also marked the seventh anniversary of his election to the papacy in April 2005. Yet if we take the last seven years into view, not just the last week, the picture changes considerably. Quite often, the most intriguing feature of this papacy isn't how Benedict has confirmed expectations, but rather how he's confounded them. Indeed, if John Paul II was a "pope of firsts" and a "pope of surprises," Benedict XVI may well go down as a "pope of ironies." The following are eight such defining ironies, meaning sharp contrasts between the stereotypes and mythology that surrounded Benedict at the beginning versus the lived reality of his reign...
