Pope Benedict's apolitical line on the Middle East, and Christians in Syria

Pope Benedict XVI will travel to Lebanon on Sept. 14-16, marking his first visit to the Middle East since the Arab Spring and his fourth overall to the region. The official purpose is to present the conclusions from the Vatican's Synod on the Middle East in October 2010. Lebanon is an obvious launching pad, since Christians make up roughly 40 percent of the country's total population of 4 million, the largest Christian footprint in percentage terms in the Middle East. It's also, of course, one of the few places in the region where the pope's safety can be reasonably assured...

Six decades a priest, and Monsignor Thomas Power never regretted one of them. The 92 year-old remained active almost until his death last month. He was thought to be New Zealand's oldest Catholic parish priest. But his ministry in the Diocese of Christchurch was notable for more than longevity.

Philanthropist Hugh Green dies
Auckland philanthropist Hugh Green has died at the age of 80. The Irish-born farmer, building contractor and investor was named New Zealand's 23rd richest person in last year's National Business Review Rich List with a fortune of some $350 million.

Phyllis Timms' mother, Katie, died in Sydney in 1968 and had lived her life thinking she was an only child. On Friday, Mrs Timms made her first visit to Wanganui to see where her grandmother, Katie's mother Hannah Quillinan, who was 29 at the time of her death, rests with Katie's brothers John and Thomas and sister Hannah, in the Heads Rd Cemetery.

Real war on religion and a ticking Vatican PR bomb

America's annual celebration of Independence Day was accompanied this year by the U.S. bishops' Fortnight for Freedom, a round of prayer and advocacy dedicated to the preservation of religious liberty. The exercise renewed debate over whether there is or isn't a war on religion in America, fueled, of course, by the politics of the 2012 election. Too often lost in the shuffle is the fact that in a growing number of other places, there's a decidedly literal war on religion under way. Its victims don't just lose government contracts or debates over insurance mandates; they're threatened, beaten, imprisoned and even murdered...

Strong winds which buffeted the South downed trees, overturned a campervan and blew the steeple off a Dunedin church. No injuries were reported.

Fifty years in God's service (photo)
Father Fergus Reeves has just two words to sum up his 50 years in the priesthood. "Thank you," he told an audience of 300 or so gathered to celebrate his milestone at St Joseph's Church in New Plymouth yesterday.

An online auction has struck a sour note with the Catholic and Anglican dioceses. A baby grand piano advertised on Trade Me sold for $6000 this week. The seller listed it as "Grand Piano from Christchurch Cathedral".

In the former category is the controversial treatment of Attorney General Eric Holder regarding a policy that saw guns put in the hands of Mexican criminals — guns that were later used to kill an American man. Now, President Obama is using executive privilege to protect Holder. President Obama is also using his executive pen to allow young illegal immigrants to stay in the United States if they've been making a contribution to the country. Firmly in the ridiculous category is an Obama campaign suggestion that people use their wedding registry to help bankroll his re-election campaign. Plans to lock-up refugees arriving in groups to New Zealand have drawn concern from across the Tasman.
