BJ'S farewell fills church (photo)
Rotorua Review
The wider Rotorua and Bay of Plenty community turned out en masse to farewell one of nature's good guys last week. Brendan John Devoy enjoyed a popularity usually reserved for public figures or those who have served their communities on a multitude of committees. Mr Devoy, who died recently aged 65, had a full life in a working environment in which it appeared he was omnipresent. He was generally known as BJ. Despite sharing a name with his celebrated sister, Dame Susan, Brendan Devoy was very much his own man.

'Pressing business' in Kororareka-Russell
It's hard to imagine a more unlikely place than Kororareka-Russell as a centre for publishing. Yet in the early 1840s, Kororareka had become known for more than just its fleshly attractions ... "At times it must have felt that the Bay of Islands was awash with religious literature - from the Church Missionary Society, the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society and later Bishop Pompallier's Marists who started producing Roman Catholic literature in 1838," says Kate Martin, the Manager of Pompallier Mission, the NZ Historic Places Trust property in Russell.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC - John L. Allen Jr

Gomez, Mahony and the 'Sodano Rule'
I'm going to compare two fights among senior churchmen, but the purpose is not to suggest they're identical. Rather, it's to understand what makes them different.
The first term of comparison is the tension between Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles and his predecessor, Cardinal Roger Mahony. Behind door No. 2 lies the highly public spat in 2010 between Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna, Austria, and Italian Cardinal Angelo Sodano, a former Secretary of State and still the dean of the College of Cardinals...

The church's natural habitat is the center, not the right
Understandably enough, most Americans probably see the Catholic church as politically conservative. Dynamics in Italy at the moment, however, illustrate that the default setting of the Catholic church actually is the center, whenever that's a live option. For those who aren't paying close attention to political theater in il bel paese, here's a brief recap...

Hohepa's pain finally subsides (photo)
There was soft singing and light rain amid the surrounding green hills as descendants of Whanganui River man Hohepa Te Umuroa unveiled his gravestone yesterday. It was an historic ceremony, because Te Umuroa died of tuberculosis in an Australian prison in 1847 and his remains were not returned to his own country until 1988. The unveiling rituals at Roma Urupa (Cemetery) near Hiruharama/Jerusalem included Catholic prayers and poipoi, a recitation of genealogy set to the rhythm of poi.
