Catholic league celebrates 75 years of helping (full text)

Members of the Morrinsville Catholic Women's League are celebrating its 75th jubilee today. With around 100 new and old members from St Joseph's Catholic Church in Morrinsville attending, president Sophia Barker said everyone was welcome to come along and join the celebrations. Mrs Barker said the day would be about celebrating the league's commitment to helping the community and people overseas through church missions. It would also be about thanking members who volunteer and help fundraise for those who needed help, she said.

Wairarapa News
Last August I wrote a column about how, back in 1980, I employed a Vietnamese couple in my meat retailing business. Hoa and My Van Nguyen were boat people and had a nine-month-old daughter named Dyung when they arrived in Masterton. Last week, Hoa and My came to visit. We were, of course, delighted to see them. They had decided to come back and catch up with those people who had helped them as refugees and it was an emotional time for us all.

Politics and Christians in the Holy Land

Given that the Vatican "gay lobby" story was back in the air this week, it may be hard for some to fathom that anything else is cooking on the church beat. Yet there is real news out there, including this: A new threat has emerged to the Christian community in the Gaza Strip ...

Religious freedom and reform in Turkey

In the spotlight this week is Turkey, where burgeoning protests represent the strongest challenge to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan since his rise to power a decade ago. Do the protestors represent the promise of positive change or something potentially more worrisome? Here's one acid test: whether they commit themselves to religious freedom, especially protection of Turkey's tiny Christian community...

An afternoon with America's Capuchin heavyweights

In a return to my spiritual roots, I spoke this week to a group of Capuchins from the Province of St. Augustine taking part in a chapter meeting in a Pittsburgh suburb. The main event came Tuesday afternoon, when the Capuchins heard from their two most prominent members in the United States: Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston and Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia. Both spoke on "The Capuchin Call to New Evangelization." ...

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC - John L. Allen Jr

Beneath the hype, Rio a major test for Francis

In exactly two months, Pope Francis will make his first overseas trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for World Youth Day. The crowds will be huge and enthusiastic, Brazil desperately wants the event to go well to showcase its status as the emerging superpower of the developing world, and Francis has already proven that he's more than ready for prime time. Beneath the hype, however, there are four challenges awaiting the new pontiff on this outing, and however many beguiling visuals and moving testimonials the trip generates, triumph is hardly a foregone conclusion...

Parishes set to merge in Catholic Church restructure (video report)
Dozens of Catholic parishes at the bottom of the North Island and top of the South Island are set to merge, in an unprecedented restructure for the Catholic Church.

Church closures likely in parish shake-up
Waikato Times
Earthquake-prone churches and a shortage of priests have shaken the Catholic Church into an unprecedented restructure. Dozens of parishes in the lower North and upper South Island are set to merge after a review conducted by the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington, with some small churches likely to close.

Catholic parishes may merge
The Marlborough Express
Blenheim, Picton and Kaikoura Catholic parishes would merge to form one parish under a planned restructure of the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington.

Catholic Church powerless in face of extreme fringe
A radical group that sent emails to MPs saying they were "on the road to hell for all eternity" if they voted in favour of the Marriage Amendment Bill has been told to stop claiming to be Catholic - but the Catholic Church admits it has no power to enforce the ruling.

Take the time to plan homes and communities - Caritas
Rushing legislation to implement new housing policy could actually undermine promising new housing initiatives in the 2013 Budget, says Catholic social justice agency Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand.

Station XV: Episode 68 — Church expands, and so does definition of marriage (May 16, 2013)

In the May 2013 episode of The 15th Station, James, Helen, Don and Gavin talk about the latest statistics that show the Catholic Church is growing faster than the rate of population growth, and the number of seminarians, priests and bishops is growing with it. Another thing that's growing is the number of relationships New Zealanders can consider marriage, with the passage of legislation allowing same-sex marriage. Some of the arguments against such moves are outlined in this piece, What is Marriage?, which Don mentions in the show. The panel also discusses Pope Francis's upcoming trip to South America, the Church's view on economic matters and the story that's gone viral — a three-year-old Colombian boy who celebrates Mass.

Demographics don't spell an end to the culture wars

To no one's surprise, the Monday release of the Vatican's 2013 statistical yearbook, which surveys the global Catholic population as of 2011, confirmed the shift in Catholicism's center of gravity away from Europe and North America to the southern hemisphere...

Don Pino: the most important beatification of the early 21st century
In two weeks, on May 25, the Catholic church will celebrate what is quite possibly the most important beatification of the early 21st century. Italian Fr. Giuseppe "Pino" Puglisi will be recognized as a martyr in a Mass celebrated in Palermo on the island of Sicily, where he was assassinated in 1993 for challenging the Mafia's hold...

FROM THE SECULAR MEDIA

Dear Readers,
The following interview is recommended by Gavin Abraham in the current 'NZ Catholic' (p.6) as a good example of the kind of service 'Catholic Voices' provides. Starting in the UK and now operating in the U.S. and Australia, Catholic Voices provides a pool of young adult Catholic laypeople who are available for interview by the secular media and have been trained to present a calm and rational Catholic viewpoint on the headline issues of the moment. Gavin thinks it would be a good idea here too -

Opinion : Bishop Denis Browne: NZ needs to talk about food poverty
The number of hungry people seeking food at night in my diocese has doubled in the past two months. St Vincent de Paul staff running the Fullfill community vans in Hamilton, Rotorua and Tauranga say these numbers include many children, and they are struggling to respond to the increased demand...

Charity van feeding 800 in Hamilton
New Zealand's Catholic bishops have joined a call for a national food programme in schools after seeing a doubling of numbers requesting food on suburban streets in Hamilton in the past two months.

Four fronts where the Vatican isn't the real problem
There are four quagmires I've come to regard over the years as the Vatican's "Neverending Stories." They are:
Negotiations with Israel over the Fundamental Agreement
The prospect of formal diplomatic relations with China
Efforts to end the Lefebvrist schism
Hopes for a papal visit to Russia and an ecumenical spring with the Russian Orthodox ...
