The pain in Spain: Camino Skies star Terry Wilson sees the trek as a 'metaphor for life'
https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/kiwi-traveller/113828709/the-pain-in-spain-camino-skies-star-terry-wilson-sees-the-trek-as-a-metaphor-for-life
Heading into a village along the Camino De Santiago in northern Spain, Terry Wilson was stopped by an unusually chatty old man.  Locals along the famous pilgrimage route don't often stop to talk to walkers because there are so many "they'd be there all day if they did", Terry says. But this man showed a keen interest in the then-68-year-old from Manawatu. When Terry told him he was from New Zealand, the stranger drew almost too close for comfort...

The past, present and future of NZ's oldest hospice as it celebrates the big 4-0
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/113824817/the-past-present-and-future-of-nzs-oldest-hospice-as-it-celebrates-the-big-40
Mary Potter Hospice, which this week celebrates its 40th anniversary, was established to provide free-of-charge palliative care to the people of Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti.Setting up such a service wasn't without its challenges, with people's idea of dealing with dying to simply "put them in the corridor" or "out in the ground" and not talk about it. It was that attitude that Margaret Lancaster and her fellow Sisters of the Little Company of Mary wanted to change for the better.

The sainthood of John Henry Newman a chance for left-right unity in the Church
https://cruxnow.com/news-analysis/2019/07/05/the-sainthood-of-john-henry-newman-a-chance-for-left-right-unity-in-the-church/
This week's announcement that Blessed John Henry Newman will be made a saint on Oct. 13 was greeted with celebration from all corners. Newman is considered a precursor to Vatican II: His writings on the Church Fathers anticipated the ressourcement theology of the mid-20th century, and his emphasis on the conscience and explanations of the development of doctrine have been a central point of post-conciliar theology. This is not to say Newman was a modern-day liberal, but it does put the new saint in an interesting category: He is embraced by most of both the Catholic left and right not so much for the holiness of his life - which for a saint, strangely doesn't get a lot of print - but for his theology...

Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Bombay, India, is a member of the council of cardinals re-writing the Vatican's constitution, and he was also tapped to be one of the four coordinators of a recent Church summit on the protection of minors. Gracias told Crux said that the reorganization of the Roman Curia - the central government of the Catholic Church - will have a "Francis effect," and have evangelization, service and charity as its three key pillars ...

The film takes the life cycle seriously and without sentiment - and that applies to people as well as farm animals and predators. Creatures are born, they die; crops sometimes fail; and coyotes who attack the chicken house are only some of the pests with which the Chesters must contend. STATION XV

Episode 139 — Cardinal, Pope, Politician, King (June 15, 2019)

Cardinal George Pell was convicted last December on child sexual abuse charges. The panel discusses his appeal process, which unfolded this month (without an outcome) and what might happen next. In Italy, changes to the translation of the Our Father have caused some consternation — mostly in English-speaking countries, where no change is expected. In New Zealand, a proudly Catholic MP has worn his faith on his sleeve in his first speech in Parliament, while the Maori King, visiting the Vatican, has invited Pope Francis to come to New Zealand. Maybe that can happen with the Holy Spirit's help, assuming said Spirit isn't too busy assisting drivers in Europe. That'll make sense when you listen to the show.
