The Hamilton Combined Christian Foodbank has experienced a surge this year in the numbers of people needing food help. Many are occupying motels due to the city's shortage of affordable housing, according to Wendy Nickalls, who is on the food bank trust board and is also the co-ordinator at Methodist City Action. Wendy brings both roles together in the lead-up to Christmas each year with a dedicated public appeal for food bank donations. That time has come for 2019.

It was a weekend of reflection for members of the St Patrick's Church at Rakauhauka during celebrations for the church's 125th Jubilee anniversary. Founded by Irish immigrants in 1894, descendants of some of the first parishioners were in Invercargill during the weekend to mark the special occasion.

17th century manuscript available for viewing at Massey's library

For several years the nondescript cardboard file-box lay on a shelf gathering dust, largely ignored and overlooked by the office's occupants. That all changed one day in 1977, when Dr John Ross, a lecturer in the English Department, decided to peep inside it. "I was astounded and very excited," he recalls, on seeing the contents. For instead of finding discarded textbooks, he came across a rare early 17th century manuscript book. The manuscript is a translation into English, from Latin, of Francois Feu-ardent's Dialogi Septem (1594). "It is likely, though not certain, that It was indeed translated and handwritten by George Brown, who was a prominent English Catholic," Dr Ross says. Whenever Pope Francis welcomes a head of state, he hands them several gifts that usually range from medals to texts. No matter who the person is, however, there's one thing that's always in the mix: his first major document, written during the first months of his pontificate, which for many is the Magna Carta of this papacy. Evangelii Gaudium, or "The Joy of the Gospel," was published in 2013 and it develops Francis's key notions, from criticizing the "invisible hand" of the market to calling for an "ecclesial renewal." Few words, however, are mentioned more than pueblo. It appears 164 times in the Spanish edition, making it the most used noun in the document...

In 1938, American historian Crane Brinton nailed it in his famous work The Anatomy of Revolution: "The revolutionists have hitherto been acting as an organized and nearly unanimous group," he wrote, surveying the British, American, French and Russian revolutions, "but with the attainment of power it is clear that they are not united." Brinton's diagnosis comes to mind in light of two months of financial scandal and controversy in the Vatican, the latest twist to which came Wednesday with the pope's appointment of a veteran Italian banker as the new head of the Vatican's Financial Information Authority, its anti-money laundering and financial crime unit...

STATION XV

http://station15.co.nz/

Episode 144 — Canberra, Rome, Amazon, Wellington, Whangamomona (November 15, 2019)

The Station 15 crew was in the courtroom for one of the biggest announcements in the Church's legal history, as the High Court of Australia agreed that it would hear arguments why Cardinal George Pell's child sexual abuse convictions should be overturned. It wasn't quite that exciting for the New Zealand bishops, but they recently made their Ad Limina visit to Rome, meeting with Pope Francis and his key advisers. The bishops were there as the much-reported Synod on the Amazon unfolded, but it was hard to find the facts among the hysteria. Back in New Zealand, there's a push from a Maori organisation to get Pope Francis to apologise for the Church's role in colonising the country back in the 19th century. Things have been a bit quieter in Whangamomona, where a 100-year-old Catholic church has seen its last hurrah — as a place of Catholic worship, at least. A typically diverse episode awaits.

Such reforms have been pushed for decades by many German bishops and lay groups who hope it can lead to the liberalization of centuries of Catholic tradition. https://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/lifestyle/117046957/children-of-little-poland-remember-75-years-since-their-arrival-in-pahatua
The story is woven into New Zealand folklore, retold as each anniversary comes up. How 733 Polish children, ripped from their families by World War II, finally found a welcome and a home at a camp in the small town of Pahiatua, 75 years ago. This weekend, as many as possible will meet in Wellington and in Pahiatua with their Kiwi children and grandchildren; friends, Polish officials and supporters. There will be tributes, song and dance, Polish cuisine and an anniversary mass to celebrate three-quarters of a century since their arrival.

A Wellington nun could be one step closer to become a saint. Mother Suzanne Aubert was known for her work with the sick and the poor - setting up the country's first home for people who were permanently disabled, establishing a creche for working parents on Buckle St and The Compassion Soup Kitchen. The New Zealand Catholic Bishops, a national body for bishops, have been in Rome for a pilgrimage and a visit with Pope Francis. During their meeting with the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the Vatican's agency on sainthood nominations, they spoke about Aubert and her potential status as a saint. ?

STATION XV

http://station15.co.nz/

Episode 143 — Resignation, Canonisation, Ordination, Consultation and Condemnation (October 16, 2019)

The resignation of Palmerston North Bishop Charles Drennan for inappropriate behaviour with a young woman was a great shock to the Church in New Zealand — and the Station 15 panel. That big story leads this episode, which (as always) traverses the globe. This month, the panel ventures to Rome via Oxford, with the canonisation of St John Henry Newman, and then to the Amazon via Rome, as a Synod of Bishops considers the life of the Church in the Amazon. Back in New Zealand, abortion legislation is on the political agenda. But is the Government playing fair? It's certainly not fair to steal a church's air conditioner, but is it OK to condemn that person to hell? Yes, it's an episode as diverse as it sounds. Enjoy

In synod's married priests debate, somebody finally names elephant in the room
https://cruxnow.com/news-analysis/2019/10/17/in-synods-married-priests-debate-somebody-finally-names-elephant-in-the-room/
In a Synod of Bishops where priest shortages in the Amazon have been driving discussion of ordaining married men, the surprise really isn't that someone finally noticed there's another solution, one that doesn't require changing the traditional criteria for getting a Roman collar. The only surprise, probably, is that it's taken this long for someone to say it out loud...
