STATION XV (podcast)

Episode 182 – Pacific, Pope, Parishes, Practice (February 18, 2023)

The bishops from around the Pacific have gathered for a major meeting, with climate change among the key topics on the agenda. On the other side of the world, Pope Francis has again found himself having to explain comments he made in a media interview, this time on homosexuality and sin. Things appeared a little clearer in Australia, for a gathering of people focused on parish renewal, and in Nigeria, where a cardinal has tried to share the secrets of the country's high Mass attendance. And in our light story for the month, Anna, Don and James discuss – no, seriously – middle fingers. Ne'er a dull moment on The 15th Station.

Church call to action as Pacific nations face 'life or death' struggle to survive climate change
BRISBANE Archbishop Mark Coleridge will join dozens of Church leaders from across Oceania for a five-day meeting in Fiji, with a clear agenda to help small Pacific Island nations struggling to survive climate change. Archbishop Coleridge said he was going "first of all as a gesture of solidarity, secondly to listen, and thirdly to ask how we can in Australia can pitch in to help". "Action is required because it is life or death for them," Archbishop Coleridge said as Australian bishops prepared for the meeting in Suva. The Federation of Catholic Bishops Conferences of Oceania from February 5-10 will bring together the bishops' conferences of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea/Solomon Islands and the Pacific Islands to reflect on and pray about their shared mission in the region.

Plain racism: why did Marist Brothers pay out less to Fijian victims than Kiwis?
For 40 years, Jerry Cataki was silent. But when he spoke up last year about the horrific abuse he suffered at the hands of two New Zealand religious brothers at his primary school in Suva, Fiji, he was offered just a fraction of the compensation a Kiwi survivor would receive.

Praying for a good price: 120-year-old Catholic church for sale
The impending sale of a 120-year-old Catholic Church in rural South Canterbury "typifies what has happened throughout rural areas", according to life-long parishoner Jim Anderson. "My father was 9 the day it was opened [in 1903]," the 85-year-old farmer said of the St Andrews Church in the St Andrews township, about 18km south of Timaru.

A new dawn and new era for college
As a new day dawned over Trinity Catholic College, it was hoped the first rays of light also marked the start of a new chapter for the troubled Dunedin high school. About 20 pupils, survivors of sexual abuse, and members of the community gathered at the school at 5am on Saturday for a blessing to mark the start of the first school year under its new name. The new name was chosen following an inquiry last year which concluded that the late Bishop John Kavanagh, after whom the college was named, did not act on a complaint of abuse when he was Bishop of Dunedin from 1957 to 1985.

At funeral, Pell hailed for bearing 'unjust condemnation' with dignity and peace
At his Vatican funeral Saturday, the late Cardinal George Pell was praised for his "greatness of intellect and heart," and, in an allusion to his conviction followed by eventual exoneration on sexual abuse charges in his native Australia, for bearing an "unjust and painful condemnation" with "dignity and interior peace." For decades Pell was an influential, tone-setting figure both in Australia and the Vatican. Pell died unexpectedly Tuesday due to heart complications after a routine hip surgery at the age of 81 ...

NZ archbishop's tribute to late pope: A 'kind and cultured gentleman'
The Catholic metropolitan archbishop of New Zealand has paid tribute to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, saying he will be remembered as a "very kind and cultured gentleman". Benedict, born Joseph Ratzinger, led the Catholic Church from 2005 until his resignation in February 2013, becoming the first pope to do so in 600 years. He died at 9.34pm New Zealand time on Saturday in the Mater Ecclesia Monastery in the Vatican.

Editorial: The three popes
Some priests may be content to spend their life tending to the needs of their flocks. Others bury themselves in the arcane history and teachings of the 2000-year-old Catholic Church. Others have a burning passion either for reform or preservation, a drive that makes them ambitious to become leader of the world's 1.3 billion Catholics. Pope Benedict XVI, who died on the last day of last year aged 95, appeared to be one of the latter, although some have also called him the "reluctant pope" ...

Wrey's Bush at one time had a very large Catholic population, most of them coming from Galway. Wrey's Bush then supposedly became the only community in the country where the only school was a Catholic one ...

A rare opportunity to turn historic Christmas Day church into a home (text and video)
The little church on the corner of Main and Kuratawhiti Sts in Greytown, Wairarapa, has served the community faithfully for more than 140 years – almost to the day. Built by Wellington architect, Thomas Turnbull, the church was opened on Christmas Day in 1880. The Catholic archdiocese has put the church and its 1090m² corner section on the market, for sale by tender. "The reason that we've chosen tenders in the past is that the tenderer wanted to keep the church intact, they weren't going to move it away or destroy it," says spokesman John Bunny of the Wairarapa parish finance committee.  [We'll be hoping for] somebody that hopefully will love and retain the church" ...

Northern Ireland mother and baby homes criminal inquiry reaches New Zealand; victims urged to come forward
A criminal investigation into physical and sexual abuse over decades at Northern Ireland homes for unmarried mothers and their children has reached New Zealand. The institutions - run by the Catholic Church, the Church of Ireland, the Salvation Army and the state - housed thousands of people, including pregnant women, girls as young as 12, and rape and incest victims, from 1922 to 1990, who often felt coerced into giving up their child. Now, the dedicated investigators believe there could be more victims and witnesses yet to come forward, with many moving or being adopted to countries overseas like New Zealand ...

Debunking three bits of papal poppycock amid Benedict XVI commentary
An inexorable media dynamic occurs whenever a major public figure dies: During the gap between the death and the funeral, journalists scramble to fill column inches and airwaves with something – anything, really – to sustain interest in the story until there's actual news to report. In keeping with that rule, the last 48 hours have brought an avalanche of commentary, analysis and dissection of Pope emeritus Benedict XVI. Much of that output has been thoughtful and constructive. Yet a few instances of what we've seen have been downright silly, at times almost self-parodying. Herewith three such claims one can find currently making the rounds ...
