Brother Denis Turner writes this Newsletter from Invercargill. He talks of
the city of Invercargill and all the changes he has noted since his return
in February. The city sounds most interesting and vibrant.

Two school newsletters are commented on - John Paul 11 High School in
Greymouth and St John’s College in Hamilton. Both newsletters show a
dedication to the students in these schools.

Mary Kirk, DRS at Marcellin College speaks of the start of the year and the
positive efforts made to integrate the years 7 & 8 into the spirit of the
school and build the family spirit. Many activities are described. All
schools have a special charism (gift). As the founder of the Marist
Brothers, St Marcellin Champagnat rested his charism upon his love of Jesus
and the intercessory power of Mary. This is reflected in the motto , “Ad
Jesum per Mariamâ€"All to Jesus through Mary.â€�

New Venture
Early in 2007, the Marist Brothers opened a community in Wellington as a
home for young men. The following is taken from the brochure introducing the
Ministry. The FM connection is about belonging to a community committed to
faith in Christ and his mission for the world, as was Mary, the first
disciple. In short FM means: Faith and Mission - Following Mary in the
footsteps of Marcellin.

The pope's communication paradox
Benedict XVI hadn't even stepped off the papal plane at Rome's Ciampino
airport on Monday, ending his May 9-13 Brazilian swing, when controversy
from the trip caught up with him. Spokespersons for Brazil's indigenous
populations were incensed by comments the pope made in Aparecida late Sunday
afternoon, asserting that the arrival of Christianity did not amount to "the
imposition of a foreign culture" upon the native peoples of the New World.
To the natives, that seemed a nasty bit of historical revisionism...

Pope's new book addresses key concerns for this pontificate: Christ is key
When people pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV news, they generally
aren't looking for a Sunday school lesson. This creates a challenge for
journalists covering religious leaders, since most of their public
utterances are devoted either to expounding their faith, or urging people to
behave. The way reporters solve the problem is by combing through those
utterances to find statements presumed to have broad, non-sectarian
significance, normally because they apply to matters of politics or
culture...
