Pope's house in NZ up for sale (video report)
http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/411365/1410564
It has been over 20 years since Pope John Paul 2 visited New Zealand but an
unusual piece of Pope memorabilia has just come up for sale. The Kitset
House the Pontiff used during his short stay in NZ has been home for the
past nine years to a Howick family and they say its been specially blessed.
Back in 1986, the three bedroom house was the base for the Pope during his
flying visit to Auckland but today its the home base for Ray and Dianne and
their two children, but not for much longer.

September, 2007. Wiremu Parker recorded the centenary celebrations in 1967

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

Global South underrepresented in college of cardinals
In naming 23 new cardinals on Wednesday, Pope Benedict XVI chose to
acknowledge one bit of demographic reality, but largely ignored a much
bigger one. Americans have noted, and rightly so, that the nomination of
Archbishop Daniel DiNardo in Houston accurately reflects a shift in Catholic
population in the United States away from the East Coast, towards the South
and Southwest. From a global point of view, however, the new crop of
cardinals is remarkably unrepresentative of where Catholics are today...

NZ Catholic Church unhappy with breakaway Latin mission (TV3 text & video
report)
http://tinyurl.com/257mrz
The Catholic Church is upset with a breakaway church offering traditional
Latin mass. While Catholics say it is an unauthorised church, the new order
says it is simply continuing with traditions. Latin mass was phased out of
New Zealand Catholicism in the 1960s in an attempt to modernise and
reinvigorate the church. Lyndsay Freer a spokesman for the New Zealand
Catholic Church says that there is a long established tradition of priests
getting permission from the local Bishop before performing mass and that the
breakaway church does not have it.

Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

Torture in his history taints Spanish martyr's beatification
Declaring someone a saint, in Catholic theology, has never meant that he or
she lived a perfect life, a point that applies with special force to
martyrs. Even great sinners, the church believes, are redeemed by shedding
their blood for the faith. In principle, therefore, the discovery that a
martyr has skeletons in the closet does nothing to weaken the value of his
or her sacrifice. Yet in practice it can raise hard questions -- if not
about the sanctity of their death, then the wisdom of publicly applauding
their lives...

interview with Cardinal Francis George, who marks his 10th anniversary this
year at the helm of the one of the largest and wealthiest dioceses in the
world. If things hold to form, George will also take over as the new
president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops at their fall

church just as America plunges into an election cycle...

Culture is “the first voice of the sacred and the ethical and cultural
principles of participation, protection and partnership contained in the
Treaty of Waitangi provide a rich backdrop for the healer’s art when

Submission to the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification â€" 2000) ...

HIV-AIDS â€" Understanding the Power of Stigma
In this article Dr. Michael McCabe looks at the origins and nature of
stigma. Stigmatisation arises from a place deep within us â€" it involves the
labelling of a person or group of persons as being unworthy of inclusion in
the human community. Those with HIV-AIDS have been subject to isolation,
blame and prejudice. As Christians, the ministry of Jesus is highly
instructive in shaping a pastoral response to the stigmatised...

Reflecting on Prenatal Detecting
The technology associated with prenatal testing is redefining the knowledge
frameworks that shape our attitudes to, and experiences of, pregnancy and
childbirth. Society has developed certain “unwritten rules about how
parents should respond to the information generated by prenatal testing.
Just as we have been debating what it means to “die with dignity so, writes
John Kleinsman, we also need to reflect on what it means to be “conceived in
dignity.

Confronting the Distortions: Mothers of Children with Down Syndrome and
Prenatal Testing
Dr. Lisa Bridle, mother of Sean who has Down syndrome, has interviewed
seventeen mothers of children with Down syndrome about how they experience
the ethical and personal choices associated with prenatal testing. Drawing
on the findings of her own research, Dr. Bridle illustrates how the
perspective of mothers of children with Down syndrome disrupts many of the
assumptions which underpin prenatal testing.

Editorial: Under Threat (full text)
The threat to our planet’s well-being is covered this month. First, an
article by Colin Tudge (pp 11-13) on enlightened agriculture, emphasising
the importance of variety in the food we grow and eat. Second (pp 6-8), an
account of a recent lecture by environmentalist Tim Flannery. Flannery
leaves us in no doubt about the global warming crisis. His treatment is
straightforward and compelling. Both of these pieces are highly critical of
current human activities. Yet both are optimistic. The basic theme is â€"
human beings have created the mess: humans can solve it...

"Stay strong boys, stay strong. There is no weakness, we must stay strong.
We're here for August, and for his family. Boys, do you hear me, you must
stay strong." These words were chanted over and over by one of slain
Auckland teenager Augustine Borrell's best mates as he and more than 100

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC
Analysis and commentary by John R. Allen

http://ncrcafe.org/node/507

Why is Fr. Peter Phan under investigation?
Over a decade ago, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger laid out with crystal
clarity what he saw as the greatest doctrinal threat of the day: a
confluence of what he described as "the a-religious and practical relativism
of Europe and America" with "Asia's negative theology," producing a profound
mutation in core Christian teachings -- with Christ seen as simply another
spiritual sage comparable to Buddha or Muhammad, and Christianity as one
valid religious path among many others...

Looking for signs of a 'great awakening' in Austria
Pope Benedict XVI grew up in Bavaria, just across the Salzach River from
Austria. In his 1997 memoirs Milestones, Joseph Ratzinger wistfully
describes joining his family for Sunday walks across a local bridge into
Salzburg, falling under the spell of Austrian culture and music. Msgr. Georg
Ratzinger, the pope's brother, recently confessed that "both of us are
Austria-lovers" ...
