On the lecture circuit, I'm sometimes asked for my opinion about the Vatican's communications strategy. My glib answer generally is, "As soon as they have one, I'll be glad to tell you what I think of it." The line usually draws a few chuckles. However, this week's furor over the lifting of the excommunication of four traditionalist bishops, including one who's a Holocaust denier, offers a reminder that the lack of PR savvy in Rome is actually no laughing matter...

Pope Benedict XVI has launched his own dedicated channel on YouTube (
http://www.youtube.com/vatican ) The Vatican says video and audio footage of
his speeches as well as news of the Holy See will be posted on the popular
video sharing website. Initially they will be in English, German, Spanish
and Italian. Vatican officials say it is aimed at everyone from devout
Catholics to the casual web user. The Vatican already has its own website
( http://www.vatican.va )which was launched in 1995. The Vatican's
Osservatore Romano newspaper says the aim is to "secure the Pope's presence
on the web."

Approach to Obama in contrast to conservative U.S. Catholics
A year into Benedict XVI’s papacy, the early line was that the people most
disappointed were the same ones most jazzed by his election. The late Fr.
Richard John Neuhaus had voiced “palpable uneasiness,� pointing to what some
saw as a lack of disciplinary muscle and a few ill-advised appointments.
Over time, that uneasiness receded as Benedict took several steps more
reassuring to the right, such as his lecture in Regensburg challenging
Islamic radicalism and his revival of the Latin Mass. Today, a new winter of
discontent may be stirring, based on the Vatican’s strikingly upbeat
approach to U.S. President Barack Obama...

Staunchly ethical role model

Doug Pattenden was staunchly ethical. He would never pocket an office pen
for home use. He gave full measure at work and expected his staff to do the
same. He was a much-appreciated senior boss in the New Zealand Electricity
Department and its later reincarnation, Electricorp. Doug died from cancer
on Monday, December 15. At his funeral at St Thomas More Catholic Church, Mt
Maunganui, former colleagues agreed he was the best boss they ever had.

Vatican, Israel lock horns over Gaza violence (again)
No crisis in the Middle East would be complete without a mini-drama
involving alleged Vatican bias in its criticism of Israel, and as if on cue,
just such a spat erupted this week. On Wednesday, an Israeli official
complained that the Vatican has swallowed "Hamas propaganda," following
comments from Cardinal Renato Martino, President of the Pontifical Council
for Justice and Peace, comparing the Gaza Strip to a "huge concentration
camp" ...

move she believes is in part linked to internal politics. Lyndsay Freer left
yesterday after 23 years' service to the church, surprised to be told that

A group of Timaru school students acting as "slaves" have raised money for
the Child Cancer Foundation. In the lead-up to tomorrow's Funrazor day, year
12 students at Roncalli College have collected more than $2000 from Timaru
businesses. The students acted as unpaid "slaves". The fundraiser was
organised by Libby Zandbergen and fellow students Morgan Jones and Charlotte
Parish. People were very supportive, Libby said. The students will also show
their support for two teachers, Gavin Hamel and David Mills, who will have
their heads shaved tomorrow to raise money to support children with cancer.

Unpublished interview with Avery Dulles
Tributes to Cardinal Avery Dulles, who died last week at the age of 90, have
already been penned by people who knew him far better than I did, and who
are in a much stronger position to assess his theological legacy. At that
level, all I can add to what's already been written is "amen." What I can
contribute to the mix of remembrances, however, are the contents of a
previously unpublished interview I had with Dulles two years ago, in October
2006, as part of the research for my forthcoming book on "Megatrends in
Catholicism...."
