In 2009, spoken features producer Justin Gregory traveled to Europe with the winners of the Royal Society of New Zealand's Big Science Adventure. An annual competition for secondary school students, this year it challenged teams around the country to make a five minute DVD on astronomy and revolutions in our thinking. The winning team - Timaru Boys High students Ryan Ammar, Matthew Keelty and Adam Simpson, as well as their teacher Tony Bunting - won a three week trip to visit observatories, science institutes and museums in Britain and Italy. Easily the most memorable was the Specola Vaticana, or the Vatican Observatory. Located in Castel Gandolfo in the hills above Rome, it's one of the oldest observatories in the world. Formerly located in the Pope's summer palace, the observatory has just moved down the road to a new location, where astronomer, meteoriticist (and Jesuit) Brother Guy Consalmagno was waiting to conduct the tour.

In recent weeks, the air has been filled with competing opinions on various Vatican matters: Whether or not it was appropriate for the Vatican to treat the sexual abuse of minors and the attempted ordination of women in the same legal document, for example. People who've done their homework can reach very different conclusions on such subjects, and informed perspectives are always worth hearing. What's tougher to take, however, are polemics from commentators who obviously don't know a motu proprio from a miter, or a dicastery from a deacon.
Herewith, therefore, my summer contribution to the ecclesiastical version of barroom arguments: A ten-point Vatican literacy test, designed to establish someone's bona fides. These questions test entry-level material, the kind of stuff that people paying attention would know, as opposed to being arcane points that only real devotees could summon...

Father Michael Mahoney is a Marist Father who was based in Brazil for the last 30 years. He was also a member of the first New Zealand expedition to Mount Everest in 1977. In my "All Things Catholic" column on Friday, I offered a rundown of stories over the last week which shook the Vatican. One item I left off that list, but which deserves to be recorded, was Pope Benedict XVI's July 1 meeting with German Bishop Walter Mixa of Augsburg, whose resignation was accepted on May 8. Senior Vatican sources told me this week that the statement issued after the meeting was almost unique in that, even though it was released by the Vatican Press Office, it was more or less directly written by the pope himself. In effect, the Mixa affair offers a glimpse of Benedict struggling to keep his bishops on the same page in a time of crisis, rather than playing the blame game by pointing fingers at one another...

In my "All Things Catholic" column on Friday, I offered a rundown of stories over the last week which shook the Vatican. One item I left off that list, but which deserves to be recorded, was Pope Benedict XVI's July 1 meeting with German Bishop Walter Mixa of Augsburg, whose resignation was accepted on May 8. Senior Vatican sources told me this week that the statement issued after the meeting was almost unique in that, even though it was released by the Vatican Press Office, it was more or less directly written by the pope himself. In effect, the Mixa affair offers a glimpse of Benedict struggling to keep his bishops on the same page in a time of crisis, rather than playing the blame game by pointing fingers at one another...
