FROM THE SECULAR MEDIA

Dear Readers,
The following interview is recommended by Gavin Abraham in the current 'NZ Catholic' (p.6) as a good example of the kind of service 'Catholic Voices' provides. Starting in the UK and now operating in the U.S. and Australia, Catholic Voices provides a pool of young adult Catholic laypeople who are available for interview by the secular media and have been trained to present a calm and rational Catholic viewpoint on the headline issues of the moment. Gavin thinks it would be a good idea here too -

Opinion : Bishop Denis Browne: NZ needs to talk about food poverty
The number of hungry people seeking food at night in my diocese has doubled in the past two months. St Vincent de Paul staff running the Fullfill community vans in Hamilton, Rotorua and Tauranga say these numbers include many children, and they are struggling to respond to the increased demand...

Francis and the risk of overheated expectations
Despite the popular impression that Pope Francis represents a strong break with the past, those who remember the early days of Benedict's papacy can't help but be struck by some obvious parallels by what we've seen over the past month. Then, as now, people were talking about a demystification of the papacy. Shortly after his election, Benedict went by his old apartment in Rome's Piazza Leonina to pack his own belongings. Then, as now, the new pope also moved swiftly to ratify a desire expressed during the general congregation meetings of cardinals prior to the conclave. In light of these and other similarities, one can't help wondering if Francis will also trip over another parallel from the early period of Benedict's papacy: the risk of overheated expectations...

Station XV: Episode 67 — Speaking frankly about Francis (April 16, 2013)

It's been just over a month since Pope Francis took the helm of the Barque of Peter as leader of the Catholic Church. In this month's episode, papal musings dominate the show, with Helen, James, Don and Gavin talking about his first Easter Triduum, his first discussion of the sexual abuse crisis and also the Argentinian connection — tenuous as it may be — between Pope Francis and Diego Maradona. The panel also chats about the likely passage of same-sex marriage legislation in New Zealand. Could anything stop it from becoming law?

A stronger commitment needed to measuring children's wellbeing (10 Apr 2013)

New Zealand needs a greater commitment to measuring the wellbeing of our country's children, say New Zealand's Catholic Bishops. Prayer vigil (full text)
The prayer vigil for marriage, which was to be held in Seymour Square on Sunday, will now be held at St Mary's Catholic Church. The hour-long non-denominational vigil will allow people who oppose changes to the current legislation on same-sex marriage a time of prayer and reflection. The organiser, the Rev Brendan O'Hagan of the Wairau Presbyterian Parish, emphasises it is not a protest, or public demonstration. "It is a peaceful prayer vigil in celebration of the sanctity of marriage between man and woman," the Rev O'Hagan said. People who share these views are invited to attend the service which begins on Sunday at 2pm.

However, I also had to look into some hard questions about the new pope's record in Argentina...

Closed churches to be repaired
Work on repairing closed earthquake-damaged Catholic churches in Pleasant Point and Temuka should begin in the middle of the year. Both churches were closed last July as a result of the damage sustained in the Canterbury earthquakes.

Euphrasie House may be first of many to go (photo)
Hamilton's Euphrasie House, built in 1939, could soon be demolished as the cost of earthquake-proofing the building would be too high.

Child abuse inquiry begins in Melbourne
Australia's sweeping investigation into child abuse within organisations ranging from churches to sports clubs and government agencies begins today in Melbourne. Although no plans to take evidence in New Zealand have been announced, it is expected the commission will consider cases in which Catholic priests were shuffled across the Tasman after committing sex crimes against children.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC - John L. Allen Jr

Who Francis may be, based on who Bergoglio was
I spent this week in Argentina in search of insight into Pope Francis from the people who know him best as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the man who was their archbishop for fifteen years. For sure, the first impression here is deep national pride. Locals say there's probably never been a better-attended Holy Week in the history of Argentinian Catholicism than after Francis' election. A Via Crucis procession in Rosario, the country's second city, usually draws 200,000 people, but this time it attracted 350,000; attendance at the cathedral in Buenos Aires was estimated to be two to three times greater than 2012. All across the country, church-goers reported standing-room-only crowds and long lines for confession...

Catholicism: Holy smoke, by Karl du Fresne
NZ Listener 28th March, 2013 Cover Story,
Despite all the scandals and controversies, Catholicism is emerging as the country's most popular denomination. It can't have been easy being Catholic these past 10 years. Sexual abuse scandals – the most recent one, involving Scottish cardinal Keith O'Brien, generated headlines just as his fellow prelates were gathering to elect a new pope – have cast a deep shadow over Catholicism; the shameful cover-ups perhaps even more so. Persistent rumours of corruption, conspiracy and power struggles within the Vatican bureaucracy have reinforced an impression of moral rot at the heart of the Church. It comes as something of a surprise, then, to discover that New Zealand Catholics are unbowed... [This article is not available online. This issue of The Listener goes on sale on Monday]

Christchurch: Are we losing our religion to modern life?
While many of us will enjoy a chocolate bunny on Sunday morning, it seems fewer people than ever may be celebrating the religious side of Easter this year. Anna Turner looks at the decline of Christianity in Christchurch.

Keeping the faith
The 1991 census figures show 17 per cent of people in Taranaki ticked the 'no religion' box. Nowadays, christenings are out of favour, people get married anywhere and everywhere and funerals are run by the funeral homes.

Elaine Wainwright - Hope in the New Pope (audio)

Opinion: Pope comes at time of fresh thinking, by Gehan Gunasekara
Acting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's statement that the late President Hugo Chavez must have exerted some influence in the heavenly realm for a South American to be elected Pope, may not be far off the mark. Leaving divine intervention aside, Pope Francis' pronouncements on the need for the Catholic Church to live in the real world and to deal squarely with issues such as inequality, combined with his personal style of modest living, resonate strongly with opinion in Latin America and elsewhere.

David Moxon is Anglican Archbishop of NZ and Bishop of Waikato - he leaves very soon for a new job as the Archbishop of Canterbury's Representative to the Holy See, and also as the Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC - John L. Allen Jr

Is there a little Magdi Allam in all of us?

Saturday will mark 10 days since the start of the Pope Francis era, and as introductions go, it's been a tour de force. Polling around the world suggests that overwhelming majorities have a positive impression of the new pope, and the media have fallen in love with a man who packs his own bags, makes his own calls and prefers to walk rather than taking the limo. As soon as Holy Week wraps up, however, the focus will shift from style to substance. Hard questions will begin to be asked about whether he's capable of delivering the reform in the Vatican that many cardinals believed they were voting for in electing him...
