As a Southland farm boy, Michael Dooley used to stand, shepherd's crook in hand, watching his father's flock.
Last night, there was not a Swanndri or a pair of gumboots in sight, but Bishop Michael Dooley once more watched over his Father's flock.

Love, pray, live the Carmelite way (photos)
At the crossroads of two of Christchurch's busiest roads, Halswell and Curletts roads, lies a desert of calm. It is tricky to straddle Halswell Rd to turn into the Carmelite Monastery, but this doesn't bother the residents at all. They rarely leave the 2.4-hectare property, where they enjoy a closed community. Like the 13th-century hermits who lived on Mt Carmel in the Holy Land, the 10 resident sisters are dedicated to a life of prayer and solitude.

Input on abuse inquiry's terms of reference ends tomorrow
The public has until tomorrow to have its say on the scope of the inquiry into historic abuse in state care. The chairperson of the commission, Sir Anand Satyanand, said more than 200 people had made submissions on the draft terms of reference so far.

Back in Rome, a gathering of young people has produced a document that — to a large extent — calls for the Church to better explain why it believes what it believes. In the US, Facebook has acknowledged some errors in deleting Catholic content, while in Brazil, it is others who are calling out the errors of the ways of a parish that went a bit overboard in modernising the liturgy. The Catholic church in Sydney this week began the formal process for the beatification of Australian Eileen O'Connor, who co-founded the religious order Our Lady's Nurses of the Poor - also known as the ''Brown Nuns'' because of their distinctive brown cloaks and bonnets. O'Connor died in 1921 aged 28, and the Sisters - who still provide nursing care to the poor, have prayed for her sainthood ever since. To talk about O'Connor, her legacy, and the role of saints in modern life, Kim is joined by Mary O'Connell, historian and author of Our Lady of Coogee: Eileen O'Connor and the founding of Sydney's Brown Nurses, and Sister Margaret Mary Birgan, a Brown Nun who is in charge of the Sydney diocese's investigation into the cause of Eileen O'Connor's sainthood.

Parish 'thrilled' rebuild of damaged New Brighton Catholic church complete (photos)
The rebuild of a Christchurch Catholic church is complete, just in time for upcoming Easter celebrations. The New Brighton St Mary's Catholic Parish of Christchurch East congregation had been meeting in a nearby community hall while the earthquake-damaged church was painstakingly rebuilt.

Regular church attendee Julian O'Sullivan received a surprise visit from Roman Catholic Bishop Steve Lowe recently. A visit to the St Peter's Catholic parish was to award the elderly parishioner the Papal Medal, Benemerent (well merited) in recognition of 25 years of devoted service to the congregation.

Considering there are only two bishops there, that's a big deal. The five-year anniversary of Pope Francis is also a big deal, but how are people assessing that period? And how do young people assess the Church and its engagement with those under the age of 30? There's more news of terrible persecution of Christians, with Rome highlighting their plight at the Colosseum.
