Orphanage abuse claim rejected

A woman who sued Catholic nuns for $550,000 claiming they were negligent in
caring for her and thus caused her physical and emotional abuse has lost her
case. In the High Court at Wellington, Justice Marion Frater has rejected
claims that the woman, whose name is suppressed, was sexually abused by a
priest while at St Joseph's Orphanage Upper Hutt. [This article is not

College opens new centre

An Ecuadorian national hero is remembered in a new $1.4 million building at
New Plymouth's Francis Douglas Memorial College. The school's Saint Miguel
Design and Technology Centre was officially opened yesterday, six years
after planning began.

to put pressure on schools. St Mark's Catholic School principal Catherine
Rivers says if the draft curriculum, released last week for consultation, is
adopted the government needs to provide more funds...

Girl's recovery key to a nun's canonisation

Jurors 'need warning' on trials of fighting old sex claims

New Zealand juries should get clear warnings about the difficulties
defending historical sex allegations to ensure fair trials, says a new
review paper. New Zealand's justice system has faced scrutiny after an
Australian Federal Court overturned extradition orders on two Catholic
clergymen facing historical sex charges on the grounds that they would face
"unjust and oppressive" trials in New Zealand...

New Zealand's national Catholic newspaper, NZ Catholic, has launched a blog
(an on-line journal) in conjunction with a group of seven "20-something Kiwi
Catholics." NZ Catholic managing editor Gavin Abraham says the site is
designed to initiate and foster constructive conversation with a Catholic
flavour. The blog has already attracted a number of "frank" posts including
one on the meaning of "dissent" in the church.
