Opinion: Falling under the spell of the guy in the silly hat, by Johnny Moore
http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/opinion/columnists/johnny-moore/9664431/Falling-under-the-spell-of-the-guy-in-the-silly-hat
My old man has been on at me this week. "Go on, write that column we
talked about. The one about how inspiring the pope is."

It looked as if Parachute's dumping major American bands in favour of
New Zealand artists didn't pay off this year. Numbers were noticeably
down, with plenty of room in the usually overcrowded seating during
morning worship.

Luke is back but Mary is still missing. A statue of St Luke stolen
from St John Catholic Church [Orewa] a fortnight ago has been
returned. It's also a year since a statue of Mary Magdalene was stolen
from the same church.

Actively helping others is a focus of the St Mary's Youth Group in
Blenheim. Its co-ordinator, Mieke Hilhorst, is better known for her
work as a portrait artist but last year she kept her easel folded away
to concentrate on youth work and her theological studies towards a
Certificate in Catholic Youth Ministry.

Central Otago woman Pat Hickey has been following in the footsteps of
the saints, writes Pam Jones. Pat last year decided to walk the
''Chemin de St-Jacques'', also known as the GR65, through France (GR
stands for ''Grande Randonnee'', signifying the French network of
trails).

Women; the old guard; pope v. pope; graffiti; and All Things Catholic
http://ncronline.org/blogs/all-things-catholic/women-old-guard-pope-v-pope-graffiti-and-all-things-catholic

Given the through-the-looking-glass dynamic of the media today,
everything Pope Francis says or does is defined as news, however hard
it may be to pin down what it means and however often he may have said
or done precisely the same thing before. Thus a short talk Francis
gave to an Italian women's center on Saturday made headlines, in this
case because of what he said about women in the church...
