Hard calls to make on heritage buildings

Wellington faces some hard decisions about its heritage buildings. The
hardest cases are iconic buildings which are part of Wellington's soul
but whose owners lack income. St Gerard's Monastery is the best
example.

Hope for Hamilton's heritage

A landmark Hamilton East building earmarked for demolition by the
Catholic Church has been awarded the city's highest heritage status.
Hamilton's new district plan, released this week, lists Euphrasie
House as a Category A heritage item, giving a timely boost to those
fighting to save the 75-year-old mission house.

Lucan from St John's College in Hastings and his parents successfully
defended his right to retain his hairdo while at the school.
Good on them for defending him against a headmaster keen to stamp his
authority. We don't need unnecessary rules in our schools or society.
No one should be judged solely on their appearance. We should judge
people on their inner character.

As anyone who paid attention in history class knows, when Spanish
explorer Hernán Cortés landed in what's now Mexico in 1519, he
promptly scuttled his ships, thereby leaving his men no choice but to
press on in conquest of the Aztec empire. This week Pope Francis
