LENT 2015

NZ Catholic Bishops' Conference: The Season of Lent
http://www.catholic.org.nz/liturgical-season/dsp-default.cfm?loadref=38

Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand: Lent in schools
http://www.caritas.org.nz/schools/lent-schools
For Lent 2015 the theme is "Light a fire in the heart of the world",
taken from Pope Francis' apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The
Joy of the Gospel).

The primary purpose of this year's Lenten resources is to educate
young people about the vulnerability of nations to natural disasters.
The aim of Caritas and its partners in the Pacific and in the
Philippines, is to go beyond the stage of simple material distribution
of basic supplies to rebuilding in such a way that communities are
less vulnerable to future events.

The resources are available on the linked Website.

An overstaying Chilean family will sit in a church car park today
waiting for the phone call telling them if they can stay in New
Zealand. The family sought refuge at three different Christchurch
churches yesterday afternoon after police visited their home on
Monday. They ended up staying in the car park of Christ the King
Catholic Church in Burnside, Christchurch.

Station XV: Episode 89 — Kids, botox and 20-minute homilies (February 16 2015)

It's hard to believe it's almost Lent, but Lucy, Don, James and Gavin
have got their penance in early with the latest jam-packed episode of
The 15th Station. Pope Francis weeks-long unpacking of families in
today's world features prominently, with his comments that couples who
choose not to have children are selfish and his green light for
fathers to smack their kids causing a double stir. A Vatican document
that suggested elective cosmetic surgery was a "burqa of the flesh"
also raised eyebrows. Back in New Zealand, there are fears Mass in
Maori — the language of indigenous New Zealanders — may die out, and
there's also anger at the inclusion of an offensive t-shirt in a
museum exhibition. Can a 20-minute homily fix it? Find out in this
month's show.

* Cycling and Christianity (Fr David Callaghan):
If you want to learn what it means to follow Jesus, it is important
that you spend less time watching football, and more time watching the
Tour de France...

* Letter For A Teenage Son Facing Adulthood (Jeremy and Michelle Dart):
I wrote a letter to my son recently, while he was away on a scouting
adventure camp. During his very first big trip (3 weeks) away, he had
some exhilarating experiences and had grown up a lot. At one point
towards the end of the camp, he called and expressed to both of us his
concern about re-integrating into our normal, busy, and rather
child-focused life here at home. This letter was my response to him,
as a means of helping him to direct his focus ...

** The Suck-O Week Of Motherhood (Lucy O'Donoghue):

** Life Of A Medical Student: The Sharing Of Stories (Lucy Watt)
As humans we have a deep desire for connection and a drive to tell
stories. The stories we tell express our lives, our beliefs, our
priorities and our dreams. They can teach lessons, connect people and
inspire change. As I go through this first year of clinical medicine,
I want to invite you to share in my story in a small way by posting
monthly(ish) reflections and stories. I can't tell you what will
happen or where we might end up but I think that's part of the fun. I
can guarantee I will face challenges and failure but also success and
joys, there will be medical learning but also life lessons and
personal growth...

lately, of Francis doing or saying things that leave lots of people
deeply confused. What explains the seeming inconsistencies? ...
