First World War Chalice Returns to Belgium Battlefield (photo)
The chalice of First World War chaplain Father James Joseph McMenamin will be handed over to New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) chaplains during a Mass at Sacred Heart Church, Petone. The NZDF will take to the chalice to Belgium where it will be used in services in Nieppe and Mesen/Messines as part of the commemorations to mark the centenary of New Zealand's involvement in the Battle of Messines.

John Roughan: He was thoughtful, selfless and agreeable to a fault
One benefit of bearing an unusual name is that anybody I meet who knew my father is liable to ask, "Are you any relation to Vaughan Roughan?" Though he was a primary school principal whose career was spent in Southland and Canterbury, his former pupils and colleagues are everywhere. "He was a nice man," they would always tell me, "a good man." He really was.

STATION XV

Episode 116 — Francis, Fatima, Faith and Fairness (May 15, 2017)
All eyes will be on the Vatican later this month when Pope Francis plays host to President Donald Trump, with the discussion predicted to cover some uncomfortable territory for the latter. Closer to home, New Zealand Catholic education leaders are looking at how best to support "unChurched" young people in their quest for faith. Across the Tasman Sea in Sydney, it was supporting pregnant women that inspired pr0-life advocates to fight proposed abortion laws. Back in Europe, Pope Francis has canonised two of the Fatima visionaries on the 100th anniversary of the first apparitions. In between time, the Holy Father found time to record a TED talk, in which he spoke about the importance of leaders who had generosity and fairness in their hearts. Join Anna, Don, James and Gavin as they navigate those stories in this month's episode.

CRUX - Edited by John L. Allen Jr. and Inés San Martin

** The lowest point in U.S.-Vatican relations will be hard to beat
The lowest point in the history of relations between the United States and the Vatican was over 150 years ago. The events surrounding the U.S. Civil War and the unification of Italy led to the breaking off of diplomatic relations between the two states, and it wasn't helped by anti-democratic feelings from the Vatican and anti-Catholic attitudes in America.

** Venezuelan bishop: We are not the opposition, we are with the people
Bishop Jose Luis Azuaje Ayala, head of Caritas Latin America, said that the Church is "always on the side of the rights of the people," and that seeing children dying and malnourished, the bishops can't remain quiet. Experts say the share of Venezuelans with severe malnutrition is growing by one percent every two months.
