$3.8m job starts on precious 130-year-old inner-city Catholic residence (photos)
A $3.8 million job has begun to restore and upgrade a protected 130-year-old home, said by heritage architects to be Auckland inner-city's oldest continually-occupied residence. Fences have gone up around St Patrick's Presbytery on the corner of Hobson St and Wyndham St, alongside St Patrick's Cathedral.

A decision on the future of the earthquake-damaged Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Christchurch has been delayed to March or April, rather the end of this year as originally planned.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull and Catholic Bishop Michael Dooley have added their voices to fresh calls for an expanded Royal Commission that includes faith-based victims of sexual abuse. The calls came as about 30 survivors, supporters and representatives from the Catholic Diocese of Dunedin - including Bishop Dooley - gathered on the steps of St Joseph's Cathedral yesterday.

Former Catholic brother says he shouldn't have to face historical child sex charges due to his age
A former Catholic brother charged with indecently assaulting a girl and two boys has applied to avoid a trial due to his age. Kevin Healy, 80, who was known as 'Brother Gordon', appeared in Napier District Court on Monday. He is accused of indecently assaulting a 12-year-old girl in 1977 and three charges of indecently assaulting two boys under the age of 16 in 1976.

A Central Otago priest has broken his silence by criticising the Catholic Church's handling of historic sexual abuse allegations. Alexandra parish priest Fr Vaughan Leslie said the church's response, within New Zealand and overseas, had helped fuel the "abuse crisis" now engulfing the church.

The Catholic Diocese of Hamilton wants to build a Catholic primary school in Papamoa. The diocese applied for funding from the Crown to build the state integrated school on the undeveloped land at the intersection of Golden Sands Drive and The Boulevard.
