Priests in the Wellington region are praying and fasting today to atone for clerical sexual abuse, but victims say the theological approach misses the point and demonstrates the Church is not listening to victims.

There are no immediate plans for the Catholic Diocese of Dunedin to follow in Wellington's footsteps by asking priests to fast to atone for historic sexual abuse by clergy.

The Catholic Church has withheld its findings about a child sex abuse accusation for months from the man who laid the complaint.

Caritas calls for climate action to prioritise the poor
A development agency says climate finance needs to be made available to the Pacific's poor and vulnerable. Julianne Hickey, from the Catholic agency Caritas, said while money to help countries adapt to climate change is increasingly available, it's not getting beyond large institutions and governments.

Mother Aubert honoured with memorial plaque (photo)
One of the most remarkable women in New Zealand history, Suzanne Aubert, was honoured in a ceremony at the Pukeahu War Memorial today, on the 92nd anniversary of her funeral. Mother Aubert, as she was known, was a nun, social worker and herbalist who founded New Zealand's only indigenous order, the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion, more commonly known as Sisters of Compassion.

As a month-long Synod of Bishops in Rome got underway this week, one natural question is whether the young people gathering here can still take the Catholic Church seriously, given the numerous scandals that have plagued its public image in the run-up.

Pope orders 'thorough study' of Vatican archives on McCarrick
Pope Francis has ordered that an investigation by the Archdiocese of New York into sex abuse allegations against ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick be combined with a "thorough study of the entire documentation present in the archives of the dicasteries and offices of the Holy See" in order to ascertain "all the relevant facts, to place them in their historical context and to evaluate them objectively."
