Two teenagers having a religious discussion in a Picton cafe were shocked after they were scolded by a member of the public. The woman, who was also dining in the cafe, told them their discussion wasn't appropriate and they should consider other people's "comfort zones".  Anna Amos, 17, who is home schooled in Waikawa, said she and a friend had been discussing the differences between their religion. Anna is non-Catholic Christian and her friend is Catholic.

Top school broke law when declining 10-year-old boy as 'not Catholic enough'
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12265163
A top secondary school has been called "unreasonable and unlawful" by the chief ombudsman in breaking its own enrolment policy when declining a place for an autistic boy. Sacred Heart College in Glendowie initially cited "high numbers of applicants" when it declined to enrol the 10-year-old boy after his initial interview in May last year. But after a complaint to the Ombudsman and an Official Information Act request by the boy's father, Robert Jones, it was found the school had given many students of "lower priority" places ahead of the boy. The school then changed its explanation and said the boy wasn't offered a place because he "wasn't Catholic enough".

2019 represents the 75th anniversary of the founding of the original St Augustine's College in Whanganui. Established in 1944 by the Marist Fathers, for the first 23 years of its existence, the College was based in an old wooden building known as Villa Maria (aka Hutchison's Folly). This was situated on the site where St Mary's Catholic Church now stands. In 1967 St Augustine's relocated to a new site in Peat Street and over the years went through various incarnations where today, as a co-educational Catholic school, it is known as Cullinane College.

Did you know that bull sharks are more dangerous than great white sharks and that if it wasn't for friction you would fall right on your face! Well, you would if you'd attended the Year 5-8 Inter-school Speech Competition held at The Hub on Thursday night. A battle of words brought seven schools from throughout the Tararua District together for some light-hearted verbal sword play. The subjects covered by the contestants were quite diverse, beginning with cats in the Year 5-6 section and ending with global warming in the Year 7-8 section. This year it was St Joseph's School's turn to shine, as it won first prize in both categories.

Five take-aways from a Labor Day crop of new Princes of the Church
https://cruxnow.com/news-analysis/2019/09/02/five-take-aways-from-a-labor-day-crop-of-new-princes-of-the-church/
This is Labor Day weekend in the United States, so perhaps it's only fitting that after a relatively slow August, Pope Francis started September by laboring. He named thirteen new cardinals Sunday, including ten eligible to vote for the next pope. Arguably, nothing any pope ever does is more consequential than appointing cardinals. Not only do they immediately become the most influential leaders in the Church, but someday they'll also elect a new pope - and, it should be added, the odds are extremely good the new pope will be one of them...
