NZ CATHOLIC BISHOPS' CONFERENCE

** Following publication last week of the Royal Commission's report on abuse by the St John of God brothers in Christchurch, Bishop Michael Gielen is encouraging us today to pray this prayer prepared by Te Ropu Tautoko. the group coordinating Catholic Church engagement with the Royal Commission on Abuse in Care.

** It's only two months to election day! The Electoral Commission has asked us to share this message and website link about enrolling and voting.

** World Youth Day 2023 Lisbon is over and our 126 pilgrims have been coming home, but here is one last fabulous video, from Lisbon with lots of activities by the Kiwi contingent and views of Pope Francis.

** Next Tuesday 15 August is Aotearoa New Zealand's National Patronal Feast, our celebration of the Assumption of Mary Mother of God.

** Bishop Michael Gielen, Bishop of Christchurch, has written a pastoral letter on the report published last week by the Royal Commission on Abuse in Care on abuse in Christchurch by the Brothers of St John of God from the mid-1950s to the early 1990s.

Phone ban means 'one less distraction' - Hamilton principal
Banning phones from schools means "one less distraction" and could have an impact on bullying, a principal says. The proposal has been called heavy-handed by a Labour MP and unnecessary by the New Zealand Principals' Association, but  Grant Stuart, the principal of St Joseph's Catholic School, Hamilton, was more positive ...

Radio host Mariner Fagaiava-Muller on speaking out: 'I guess it's much easier playing to a stereotype . . . I always wanted to right those wrongs.
Mariner Fagaiava-Muller has a lot to say. As a radio host, that's not surprising. He's literally paid to talk. But what catches me off guard are the topics occupying the mind of the chatty 22-year-old host of the Drive radio show on Flava. Sexuality, religion, politics, identity, family, colonialism and culture all come up during our hour-long chat.

Students 'really chuffed' with win
St Peter's College Gore has won this year's Bishop's Shield public speaking competition. Competed for by pupils from the Dunedin Catholic Diocese's four high schools, this year's competition — in the event's 79th year — drew 80 pupils last weekend.
