Dealing to the demons
It comes as something of a relief when one of the Catholic Church's unofficial exorcists looks you in the eye and finds that there is no sign of you being possessed by demons. Father John Rae was in Timaru recently, not to perform what he prefers to call deliverances rather than exorcisms, but to conduct healing services.

9 July is the 'Jubilee of the Prisons'. In advance of it, Pope John Paul has issued a message of which the general theme is that "prison should not be a corrupting experience, a place of idleness and even vice, but instead a place of redemption." In the next few days I'll be opening a new section on the page for World Youth Day and the Jubilee of Young People (15-20 August) and I hope this will coincide with a new section on the bishops' Web site 'For Young Catholics'.

Thousands of members of Auckland's Catholic migrant communities gathered at the ASB Stadium on Sunday, 18 June to honour the Jubilee themes of Reconciliation and Unity. In a colourful ceremony beginning with a powhiri and followed by Mass, the migrant communities offered 'He Tautoko' (a Pledge of Support) to the Ngati Whatua and all Maori. The text of the Pledge follows the report of the event on the News page.
The Vatican will formally publish the 'Third Secret of Fatima' together with a commentary next Tuesday our time. There is interest about it in the secular news media so you will probably hear or read about on TV or radio first. Then, in the next day or two you can read the full text of the message and the commentary via the Catholic news service links on the News page.

A few weeks ago invitations went out to Rome's homeless people to have dinner with Pope John Paul and some of the Vatican Cardinals and bishops. Reports about the dinner are on the Jubilee News page (the Associated Press report includes a photo of the event).
Jubilee events are slowing down now as Rome approaches its hottest summer months and Pope John Paul prepares to go off to the mountains for his summer vacation. So apart from the Eucharistic Congress this week, there won't be a lot of Jubilee events to report for a while. However I will open a new section on the Jubilee News page for reports on preparations for World Youth Day, August 16-18.
In that connection, I have nearly finished the first draft of a new section on the bishops' Web site for young Catholics, meaning from childhood to twenty-somethings. Before this goes public I will be asking everyone interested to give me their comments on the draft. Next week, hopefully.

There are 58,000 students in Catholic schools nationwide. They make up 80% of the numbers of students in Integrated schools. Internationally, 44 million young people attend Catholic schools ... 'Recognition is well-deserved ' The top honour in the Queen's Birthday Honours List announced last weekend went to Cardinal Tom Williams. ON TV One of the forthcoming stories from 'NZC' reports that a series of broadcasts of the Mass on Prime TV has been guaranteed by a generous gift from an anonymous donor. The time is 11.30 am on Sunday morning. Prime's broadcast frequencies are on: http://www.primetv.co.nz/transmission/transmission.html I will add this link and a note about the broadcasts to the bishops' Evangelisation page in the next few days.
The Wellington TV station Channel 7 has a weekly 30-minute evening programme "Sunday on Seven", hosted by Father Peter Roe SM. It is broadcast twice on Sunday: at 5pm and 7 pm. Each programme begins with the gospel reading from that Sunday's Mass, followed by a an interview. The aim of the programme is to "discuss religious faith in a non-judgemental way" so this is not a specifically Catholic programme or an evangelizing one. It just wants to get the attention of people who have some interest in the spiritual dimension of life. This programme also need funding to continue.

Jubilee of Migrants and Travellers: June 1-4: On 2 June Pope John Paul presided at a Mass for 50,000 representatives of migrants, travellers and homeless people. On their behalf the "Jubilee Charter for the Rights of Refugees" was presented to the Pope along with the Offertory gifts at the Mass in St. Peter's Square. As part of this Jubilee, a little flotilla of fishing and pleasure boats left the Israeli port of Haifa to retrace the route followed by Saint Paul (Acts 27-28). We have links to Pope John Paul's homily at the Jubilee Mass and to reports of the main events.
Jubilee of Journalists : June 1-4: Some 7,000 journalists from 52 countries arrived in Rome to participate in their Jubilee. The opening ceremony took place in the Sistine Chapel. Next day the journalists attended a conference on the challenges posed today at all levels of social communications. On Saturday, the journalists crossed the threshold of the Holy Door of St. Paul Outside the Walls as a sign of conversion and participated in an ecumenical celebration. After Mass on Sunday they will meet Pope John Paul in the Vatican Audience Hall. We have links to reports of the Jubilee events so far; to an interview on the topic of Pope John Paul's relationship with the media; and to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications' document "Ethics in Communications".

ON TV One of the forthcoming stories from 'NZC' reports that a series of broadcasts of the Mass on Prime TV has been guaranteed by a generous gift from an anonymous donor. The time is 11.30 am on Sunday morning. Prime's broadcast frequencies are on: http://www.primetv.co.nz/transmission/transmission.html I will add this link and a note about the broadcasts to the bishops' Evangelisation page in the next few days.
The Wellington TV station Channel 7 has a weekly 30-minute evening programme "Sunday on Seven", hosted by Father Peter Roe SM. It is broadcast twice on Sunday: at 5pm and 7 pm. Each programme begins with the gospel reading from that Sunday's Mass, followed by a an interview. The aim of the programme is to "discuss religious faith in a non-judgemental way" so this is not a specifically Catholic programme or an evangelizing one. It just wants to get the attention of people who have some interest in the spiritual dimension of life. This programme also need funding to continue.

Jubilee of Migrants and Travellers: June 1-4: On 2 June Pope John Paul presided at a Mass for 50,000 representatives of migrants, travellers and homeless people. On their behalf the "Jubilee Charter for the Rights of Refugees" was presented to the Pope along with the Offertory gifts at the Mass in St. Peter's Square. As part of this Jubilee, a little flotilla of fishing and pleasure boats left the Israeli port of Haifa to retrace the route followed by Saint Paul (Acts 27-28). We have links to Pope John Paul's homily at the Jubilee Mass and to reports of the main events.
Jubilee of Journalists : June 1-4: Some 7,000 journalists from 52 countries arrived in Rome to participate in their Jubilee. The opening ceremony took place in the Sistine Chapel. Next day the journalists attended a conference on the challenges posed today at all levels of social communications. On Saturday, the journalists crossed the threshold of the Holy Door of St. Paul Outside the Walls as a sign of conversion and participated in an ecumenical celebration. After Mass on Sunday they will meet Pope John Paul in the Vatican Audience Hall. We have links to reports of the Jubilee events so far; to an interview on the topic of Pope John Paul's relationship with the media; and to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications' document "Ethics in Communications".

The Jubilee of Scientists was celebrated in Rome last week by several thousand scientists and researchers who attended a special Mass and an international congress. On the Jubilee news page you will find links to Pope John Paul's addresses to the participants on the theme of faith and reason, and to other items from the science congress.
Incidentally, we now have a New Zealand Catholic organisation devoted to the study and promotion of bioethics, the Nathaniel Centre, directed by Fr Michael McCabe. The NZ Catholic Directory lists a Web site for the Centre at http://www.nathaniel.org.nz but this is not operating yet.
EDUCATION - STUDENT SOCIETIES. CHAPLAINCIES CathSoc Otago at http://www.catholic.org/newzealand/dunedin/cathsoc is the second Catholic students' association with a full Web site, the other being CathSoc Auckland - http://www.cda.org.nz/cathsoc
And Victoria University has the second full site for a Catholic Chaplaincy - http://www.vuw.ac.nz/chaplains/kohanga.html Auckland again has the other one.

The proposed legislation has since been referred to a parliamentary select committee after being criticised from all parts of the political spectrum.

This weekend's 'NZ Catholic' newspaper includes an annual advertising feature about our New Zealand Catholic schools. One aspect of it completely baffles me.
Of the 21 high schools which have advertisements this year, 14 have Web sites describing their school's curriculum and environment in text and pictures in far more detail than it's practical to do in an advertisement. Yet only one of the 14 (Catholic Cathedral College) has included their home page address with their other contact information. This happens year after year and I cannot understand it.
I can't believe it's because of embarrassment. Our secondary school Web sites are at least comparable in their look and content to the New Zealand average, and some have gone to considerable expense to have professional-looking pages made. It's one of those questions which are difficult to ask without causing offence, and yet it screams for an answer: why establish your school on the World Wide Web and then keep quiet about it? It doesn't make sense. What's more, Web site addresses are commonplace now in advertisements for schools and everything else, so that people have come to expect them. In omitting their home page addresses, our Catholic schools risk giving a false impression that they lag behind others in their use of modern media!
I have mentioned this point today in a post to Pat McCarthty, editor of 'NZ Catholic'. What the schools put in their advertisements is of course entirely up to them, but if their home pages are being omitted just because of an oversight (affecting all 13??) then perhaps Pat might give them a gentle nudge next year.

The Catholic bishops have expressed their "very serious concern" to the Government at its apparent intention to have marriage, de facto relationships and same-sex relationships put into one piece of property legislation.
