Waitara church is significant

It may not be an ancient cathedral, but St Joseph's church in Waitara could soon have similar status. The Nelson St building is being considered by New Plymouth District Council for addition to the district plan as a category A historic building, meaning it will have the highest possible protection. He was the kind of man you'd pass in the street without a second glance a good, solid, salt-of-the-earth type who'd always been able to support his family with his skills. Now he sits slumped in a chair in a church office, looking down at his clenched workingman's hands. The events of the last few weeks have stripped him of pride.

One step from heaven
New Zealand Herald — H003 — 16 May 2009
There aren't too many developers who can say the successful sale of their latest luxurious clifftop creation features in the prayers of 20 nuns. Award-winning builder-developers Nigel and Jackie Benton built this palatial new masonry home with panoramic sea views on land subdivided off the grounds of the neighbouring Catholic rest home. The Marian Rest Home is a small facility within spacious grounds, catering for elderly Catholic nuns and laywomen.

** Familia ** - Episode 8
In this month's edition of the Familia Podcast we explore the following questions: 1. What are the 'original experiences of man'? 2. Why did God create people with homosexual desires? 3. How can you counsel people who are pregnant and worried to keep their babies without moralizing? 4. How do you deal with friends who are sleeping together - how do we love them without condoning their actions? 5. When we give our lives to Christ do we really have to cease to exist as an individual?

'Icon" could be one of the most abused words in the English language. Its traditional religious meaning has long been drowned out by chatter about "iconic" this and "iconic" that, and there's no way that the quiet, and largely unnoticed, visit of an Australian man to Nelson this week could have done anything to rescue the word's original meaning and intent...

He issued a pastoral letter on the subject in 2000 called “As I Have Done For You,” presided over an archdiocesan synod in which ministry was a major focus, and sponsored three subsequent documents on leadership by the ordained and non-ordained, the role of a lay administrator in a priestless parish, and parish-based evangelization...

A possible pope, malaise in the Vatican, and you can't please everyone

For anyone interested in Catholic life, certain weeks in Rome are akin to what it must feel like to be a film buff at Cannes or Sundance -- there's so much going on, you hardly know where to start. This was one of those weeks, so instead of a unified narrative, I'll offer a few vignettes from the Eternal City...

Familia - Episode 7
This month's edition of the Familia Podcast explores the following questions: - How does a committed Catholic balance the Catholic teaching about contraception with practical realities like saving for a house, etc? - Is it okay for a couple to say that they just want 3 kids and no more? - What benefit do married couples get from seeing vocations to religious life and vice versa, and how do you explain why vocations are not necessary in heaven? - What advice can you give a couple who are considering contraception just for their honeymoon? - If you are engaged and you wish to be faithful to the Catholic teaching on birth regulation– when should charting of NFP be started? - Why are there so many Catholics who use contraception?

God's love endures in story of Easter

Christ's gospel needed more than ever, by Garth George
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/opinion/news/article.cfm?c_id=466&objectid=10565913
While I was reading once again the other night the timeless and evergreen story of the first Easter, a piece of paper fell out of my elderly and much-thumbed Bible. It contained a daily reading _ from what year I know not _ written by one C. Knott and based on Matthew 16:18: ``And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.'' Knott wrote: ``The Lord Jesus left us in no doubt about what he is doing during this age _ he is building his Church. He is not improving society. He is not reforming through politics. He is saving people and thus calling them out of the world and into his Church.
