Ferment in Nigeria; Syria; the Vatican bank; and sex scandals

Perhaps it's the curmudgeon in me, but I'm always drawn to news stories that seem to upend conventional wisdom, and I award bonus points if the story challenges both liberal and conservative biases at the same time. That quirk probably explains why I find recent developments in Nigeria's Ahiara diocese so fascinating...

Shifting plates in Rome and Tehran; Francis in Brazil; and St. John Paul

Thirty-five years ago, Iran and the Vatican seemed on parallel paths. ALL THINGS CATHOLIC - John L. Allen Jr

An afternoon with America's Capuchin heavyweights

In a return to my spiritual roots, I spoke this week to a group of Capuchins from the Province of St. Augustine taking part in a chapter meeting in a Pittsburgh suburb. My talk, however, was just the undercard. The main event came Tuesday afternoon, when the Capuchins heard from their two most prominent members in the United States: Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston and Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia. Both spoke on "The Capuchin Call to New Evangelization." ...

Deliverance from evil every day
Exorcism is part of her job description, a Timaru minister says.

Exorcisms all about prayer and kindness
Father Michael Blain does not believe in demons, but was once Wellington's own city exorcist. Now 70, the retired Anglican priest sees his old job as just another way of helping people. He learned exorcism in rural Zimbabwe, where he worked in the 1980s.

After the crash (photo)
Chanelle Taupo sat at her uncle's home in Melbourne listening to the phone call that she prayed was a joke. There had been a crash, she was told. Three of them were dead. Another was on life support at Middlemore Hospital. Dominic Stehlin, her partner and the father of her unborn child, was the driver. He didn't make it.

Councillors given QSM honours
Former Rangitikei councillor Maureen Fenton and current Wanganui councillor Sue Westwood received their New Year's honours at Government House in Wellington yesterday.

Priest feels call of Antarctica again (photo)
A trip to Antarctica is just a dream for most people but for a Timaru priest it could be a reality for the third time. Holy Family's Father Brian Fennessy is hoping he passes the stringent medical tests again so he can do another four-week stint at American Research Centre McMurdo Station in November.

ALL THINGS CATHOLIC - John L. Allen Jr

Beneath the hype, Rio a major test for Francis

In exactly two months, Pope Francis will make his first overseas trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for World Youth Day. The crowds will be huge and enthusiastic, Brazil desperately wants the event to go well to showcase its status as the emerging superpower of the developing world, and Francis has already proven that he's more than ready for prime time. Beneath the hype, however, there are four challenges awaiting the new pontiff on this outing, and however many beguiling visuals and moving testimonials the trip generates, triumph is hardly a foregone conclusion...

Parishes set to merge in Catholic Church restructure (video report)
Dozens of Catholic parishes at the bottom of the North Island and top of the South Island are set to merge, in an unprecedented restructure for the Catholic Church.

Church closures likely in parish shake-up
Waikato Times
Earthquake-prone churches and a shortage of priests have shaken the Catholic Church into an unprecedented restructure. Dozens of parishes in the lower North and upper South Island are set to merge after a review conducted by the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington, with some small churches likely to close.

Catholic parishes may merge
The Marlborough Express
Blenheim, Picton and Kaikoura Catholic parishes would merge to form one parish under a planned restructure of the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington.

Catholic Church powerless in face of extreme fringe
A radical group that sent emails to MPs saying they were "on the road to hell for all eternity" if they voted in favour of the Marriage Amendment Bill has been told to stop claiming to be Catholic - but the Catholic Church admits it has no power to enforce the ruling.

Take the time to plan homes and communities - Caritas
Rushing legislation to implement new housing policy could actually undermine promising new housing initiatives in the 2013 Budget, says Catholic social justice agency Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand.

Tributes flow as church duo retire (photo)
A fond farewell was given to Temuka St Joseph's Catholic Church stalwarts Rosanna Munro and Sister Lorraine Gaines last week as they were forced to retire due to ill health.

Station XV: Episode 68 — Church expands, and so does definition of marriage (May 16, 2013)

In the May 2013 episode of The 15th Station, James, Helen, Don and Gavin talk about the latest statistics that show the Catholic Church is growing faster than the rate of population growth, and the number of seminarians, priests and bishops is growing with it. Another thing that's growing is the number of relationships New Zealanders can consider marriage, with the passage of legislation allowing same-sex marriage. Some of the arguments against such moves are outlined in this piece, What is Marriage?, which Don mentions in the show. The panel also discusses Pope Francis's upcoming trip to South America, the Church's view on economic matters and the story that's gone viral — a three-year-old Colombian boy who celebrates Mass.

Demographics don't spell an end to the culture wars

To no one's surprise, the Monday release of the Vatican's 2013 statistical yearbook, which surveys the global Catholic population as of 2011, confirmed the shift in Catholicism's center of gravity away from Europe and North America to the southern hemisphere...
