A Catholic priest who smeared paint on an Israeli memorial during a protest in January has been remanded on police diversion. Gerard Burns has been remanded by a Wellington District Court registrar to May 21 to complete tasks to be set for him in return for police dropping a wilful damage charge. To be eligible for diversion, he has to admit the offence. He mixed a drop of blood with red paint and smeared it on the Yitzhak Rabin memorial in protest against Israel's invasion of the Gaza Strip.

While I was reading once again the other night the timeless and evergreen story of the first Easter, a piece of paper fell out of my elderly and much-thumbed Bible. It contained a daily reading _ from what year I know not _ written by one C. Knott and based on Matthew 16:18: ``And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.'' Knott wrote: ``The Lord Jesus left us in no doubt about what he is doing during this age _ he is building his Church. He is not improving society. He is not reforming through politics. He is saving people and thus calling them out of the world and into his Church.

St Thomas More Catholic Parish in Mount Maunganui has been awarded the ultimate gift before Easter with the creation of frames to hold the 14 Stations of the Cross. Twenty senior students from a technical skills class at Otumoetai College spent five weeks hand-crafting the frames from environmentally friendly produced hardened pine.
