STATION XV

Episode 132 — Investigation, Implementation, Immigration and Invocation (November 16 2018)

After lobbying from the Catholic Church and others, the New Zealand Government's inquiry into child sexual abuse in institutions will include faith-based organisations. In the US, the Bishops have delayed implementing new abuse protocols after the Vatican asked them to wait until after the February gathering of presidents of bishops' conferences. Also in Rome, the Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment concluded with calls for the Church to listen more carefully to youth and for young people to trust Church leaders — despite acknowledgements some leaders haven't always been worthy of that trust. Anna, Gavin and James also consider the case of a Melbourne mum in immigration detention that can't have her child baptised in a nearby church. In Florida, meanwhile, a church has been barred from serving as an election place in future after the pastor got a bit too political. All in a month's work for the 15th Station crew!

$3.8m job starts on precious 130-year-old inner-city Catholic residence (photos)
A $3.8 million job has begun to restore and upgrade a protected 130-year-old home, said by heritage architects to be Auckland inner-city's oldest continually-occupied residence. Fences have gone up around St Patrick's Presbytery on the corner of Hobson St and Wyndham St, alongside St Patrick's Cathedral.

Catholic bishop delays Christchurch cathedral decision, puts building projects on hold (photos)

A decision on the future of the earthquake-damaged Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Christchurch has been delayed to March or April, rather the end of this year as originally planned.

More voices call for wider inquiry (text, photos, video)
Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull and Catholic Bishop Michael Dooley have added their voices to fresh calls for an expanded Royal Commission that includes faith-based victims of sexual abuse. Former Catholic brother says he shouldn't have to face historical child sex charges due to his age
A former Catholic brother charged with indecently assaulting a girl and two boys has applied to avoid a trial due to his age. Kevin Healy, 80, who was known as 'Brother Gordon', appeared in Napier District Court on Monday. He is accused of indecently assaulting a 12-year-old girl in 1977 and three charges of indecently assaulting two boys under the age of 16 in 1976.

** Bishops press for abuse scandals, women and more to be in final text

As a monthlong summit of bishops in Rome enters its final week, the latest round of reports from small working groups organized by language released on Saturday suggests a growing impatience to get practical.
