New museum in North Hokianga 'will rival any' in Far North
A new museum being built at a remote North Hokianga marae will rival any in the Far North, a curator says. Others were donated to Motuti Marae by international visitors.

When Mary and twin sister Jo were born on the farm run by the sisters of St Mary's Convent, on what is now St John's College, on New Year's Eve 1923, Hamilton had two  bridges, many suburban roads were dirt, and cyclists got around at night using carbide lamps. Her parents, Irish immigrants Charles and Margaret Lynch, helped work the farm for the sisters, and were responsible for milking the cows.

Pope's new app for fighting abuse is glitzy, but what about the OS?
Let's be clear that a new set of norms governing clerical sexual abuse cases authorized by Pope Francis and released Thursday by the Vatican are, by Roman standards anyway, a big deal. As a Vatican editorialist put it, the norms represent "a further and incisive step in the prevention and fight against abuse" ...

RNZ. Sunday, with Jim Mora. 11.04: Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ: The Vatican's official star gazer
Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ is the Vatican's official astronomer and advisor to the Pope. He's been touring New Zealand this week and as part of his travels here gave an address in Christchurch. He's also a fan of the Southern Skies and included a stop off in Tekapo to observe the universe from, what he says, is the best vantage point in the world. He speaks to Jim about faith and science, why it's always been an important part of his life and what his job involves. He's passionate about the two disciplines working in unison particularly as he believes science keeps religion away from superstition.

Look up! That's the message from visiting Vatican chief astronomer Brother Guy Consolmagno. He cannot believe how many people never bother to look up, or don't even know there's anything up there, and worries about the encroachment of artificial light into the night...

Life, the universe and everything through the Vatican astronomer's lens
Brother Guy Consolmagno had flown more than 18,000 km from the Vatican to New Zealand. On Thursday Brother Guy Consolmagno ended up at Hamilton's St John's College on his national tour after the school requested an audience. Disinterested teens laughed in groups around the entrance to the school's library. Was it worth sitting through a lecture with some guy, or should they sit through their classes instead. As they piled in it was obvious they'd all had the same idea. Anything to get out of math...

STATION XV

Episode 137 — Future Church, future leaders, future laws, future Easter (April 17, 2019)

It's Holy Week, and the panel reflects on Pope Francis' call for Catholics to be humble in their lives and to know when it's appropriate to keep silent. Campaigners against euthanasia in New Zealand have certainly not been quiet as they seek to bring an end to efforts to legislate for the practice. Back in Rome, Pope Francis has written to young people and given them encouragement to embrace the faith, something Cardinal John Dew is trying to do in Wellington as the Church goes through some significant changes. The non-robotic group of Anna, Don, James and Gavin usher you through those topics and more.

Pope reminds outcasts that Christ's death, resurrection are for them

Pope says Jesus lives here and now, not in a history book
Jesus has risen and is alive today, not as a character from the past found in history books but in day-to-day life, Pope Francis said Saturday as he celebrated the Easter Vigil Mass in St. Peter's Basilica. "To return to a lively love of the Lord is essential," Francis said. "Otherwise, ours is a 'museum' faith, not an Easter faith ..."

When Christian bells rang out for respect and unity
Such has been the extraordinary outpouring of emotions and gestures of solidarity in the past two weeks that even Palmerston North's sleeping civic church was roused from its slumber. Pope's new youth doc draws largely rave reviews from young consultants
Pope Francis on Tuesday published a new document dedicated to youth, bringing full-circle a process of consultation that began last year when the Vatican reached out to young people around the world ahead of an October summit of bishops on how to better approach them. Called Christus Vivit, the document is 180 pages long and takes into consideration not only what was said during the Synod of Bishops but also what the youth said during a pre-synod gathering that took place in Rome several months earlier...

(Second Opening Prayer for the Fourth Sunday of Lent)

God our Father,
your Word, Jesus Christ, spoke peace to a sinful world
and brought mankind the gift of reconciliation
by the suffering and death he endured.

Teach us, the people who bear his name,
to follow the example he gave us:
may our faith, hope and charity
turn hatred into love, conflict into peace, death to eternal life.
